¿Why do the breasts get darker in pregnancy?
It may be the first, the second or the third, the truth is that in each pregnancy our body changes; the abdomen grows, the appetite increases ... and although few know it, the breasts darken, especially the nipples.
During pregnancy, the levels of progesterone and estrogen increase in order to prepare the breasts for the next lactation: the system of milk ducts is expanded by the formation of more lobes, which causes the breast to grow and the areolas make them darker, "says Lillie D. Shockney, Managing Director of the Breast Center in Baltimore.
But what is the purpose of this change?
Several studies support the theory that the areola and nipple alter their color to make it easier for the newborn to find them.
However, the darkening of the breasts may also be due to other factors:
- Menstruation
Due to the hormonal change that occurs during the cycle, the size of the nipples and the skin that covers them darkens during these days, but returns to its natural state after the period.
- Puberty
This happens after age 11 and lasts until age 25, but it depends on each body.
- Illness or aging
Over time, the skin faces a different number of changes, including darkness around the eyes, nipples, age spots, wrinkles or fine lines.
Although pregnancy can change the color of your breasts, it is important that you go with a health expert to make sure that your state of health is adequate. Beware!
