Wednesday Walk: A local temple in Nongkhai, วัดที่ต้องผ่านประจำที่หนองคาย

This is my entry for #wednesdaywalk hosted by @tattoodjay. Sometimes I tend to take things for granted, it occurred to me that I have never really walked around this local temple on my way to my friends’ food stall. Their stall is right by this temple. I was glad I did eventually take a walk around Wat Sri Chomchuen in Nongkhai.

The name of this temple was taken from the bane of the medicinal plants which have been growing profusely in the old days. Nowadays there are a few of these plants left in one corner of the temple. There is a big board by the plant telling us about its medicinal properties.

The atmosphere in this temple is nice and calm as there are still several old big trees. This must have been built from the old temple run of several hundred years ago. I could see the old Buddha statue from the reign of the Lanna period in the Ordination Hall or Ubosod.

The hundreds years’ old tree with the local shrine for paying respects to those tree spirits tell of mysterious stories among the locals. Older generations of villagers here are very psychic and many are mediums in local pagan ceremonies every year.

I was quite surprised to see a few big drums and well built drum towers in this temple. This indicates to me that this must have been a very influential temple in the past with lots of monks and followers. Over eighty years ago, all temples had no electricity, no running water and no clocks so they usually had bell towers to mark times of the day while some would have big drums as they were much cheaper and available in the countryside. I still could hear faint drum beats on my village telling the monks and villages their daily schedule.

วันนี้เราจะพาไปเดินเที่ยววัดที่หนองคาย เป็นวัดที่เราต้องผ่านทุกครั้งที่นั่น แต่เราไม่เคยไปเดินสำรวจโดยรอบสักที สองสัปดาห์ก่อนเราจึงเข้าไปเดินเล่น ทำให้เราแปลกใจหลายอย่าง วัดศรีชมชื่นเป็นวัดเก้าแก่มาหลายร้อยปี ชื่อวัดก็ได้มาจาก ต้นชมชื่นที่เป็นไม้สมุนไพร ที่เคยขึ้นหนาแน่นที่บริเวณนั้น เขามีป้ายติดที่ต้นไม้บอกสรรพคุณยา จากต้นไม้นี้ ที่นี่ยังมีหอกลองถึงสองหอ มีระฆังอยู่ชั้นบนสุด และยังมีฆ้องยามด้วย ที่น่าสนใจที่สุดคือ พระพุทธรูปเก่าแก่หลายร้อยปี เป็นแบบล้านนา สมัยเดียวกับหลวงพ่อพระใส ชื่อพระมงคลเนรมิตร ที่รอบวัดมีต้นไม้ใหญ่อายุหลายร้อยปีหลายต้น ทำให้มีบรรยากาศร่มรื่นและสงบมาก เราได้กราบขอพรพระในโบสถ์ และดูหอพระไตรปิฎกที่สร้างได้แข็งแรงและสวยงามมาก ลวดลายที่นี่จะเน้นลายพญานาคเป็นหลัก นี่เป็นความเชื่อที่ฝังลึกมากมาตั้งแต่รุ่นบรรพบุรุษ คนสมัยก่อนคงได้เคยเห็นพญานาคตัวเป็นๆกัน สมัยนี้คนที่นี่ยังเชื่อว่ามีพญานาคในแม่น้ำโขง แต่อยู่ในถ้ำใต้นํ้าลึกมาก

เราชอบดูลายไม้ที่เป็นลายพญานาค และภาพเขียนของสัตว์ในตำนานโบราณ เราคิดว่าสิ่งเหล่านี้คงเคยมีในครั้งพุทธกาลนานมาแล้ว เดี๋ยวนี้ก็มีแต่เรื่องเล่าและนิทาน ที่เราอ่านเพื่อความบันเทิง น่าเสียดานที่คนไทยส่วนใหญ่ไม่สนใจศิลปะวัฒนธรรมในอดีต ต่อไปเราอาจจะไม่ได้เห็นหรือรับรู้รากเหง้า ความเป็นมาของที่มาของบรรพบุรุษอีก เราก็จะกลายเป็นหุ่นยนต์ที่ไปตามกระแสความเชื่อและคุณค่าที่ฝ่ายทุนนิยมป้อนให้ผ่านสื่อต่างๆนั่นเอง
