Visiting a plant nursery in Nongkhai

There seems to be a new fashion among modern Thai people about buying at least one cactus for decorating the sitting room. I have noticed this trend during the past few years. I begin to spot small pots of cacti in offices, window sills and verandas of several houses. I thought it might be because of their very cheap prices.

But I am not too certain about cheap prices, as I begin to see expensive cactus on sale nowadays. This friendly plant nursery had lots of cacti in small pots for sale on the day I dropped by to get some mango trees. I was wondering who would be buying these tiny cacti.

To my surprise, the owner told me that she sold all cacti within one week!! There were other retailers who bought these cacti to sell in their shops around the province.

Thai people are usually quite superstitious and they start to give different meanings to cactus. Some people buy cacti as they heard that these plants will bring them money and wealth. The Thai name of cactus could be interpreted as ‘baton with embedded diamonds’. Some believe that some cactus has magical power against thieves and robbers!

But I have yet to have someone confirmed to me that cacti do have the above properties.
