Market Friday: my neighbour’s birthday celebration on a rainy day,งานวันเกิดเพื่อนบ้านในวันที่ฝนเท

This is my entry for #marketfriday hosted by the generous and compassionate @dswigle. Last weekend I was invited to a birthday party by my next door neighbour. This was the first time I had the chance to see local retired civil servants’ reunion.

This DJ must be almost seventy years old! His hearing was not so good and the music was too loud. I had to ask him to lower the volume. The monks’ chanting could probably be heard in Laos, the other side of the river!

The rain poured down heavily throughout the night which made me feeling very lazy for formal birthday party. The road became very slippery so I was out in full gear for heavy rain. I was the only one arriving in rubber boots, rain jacket and a big umbrella. But it was fun walking in the rain among green trees and noisy birds’ songs.

The birthday host has arranged for ten tables of eight-course Chinese lunch for guests. I was intentionally late so that I would have some time to take photos and to avoid the introductory ritual. The monks were chanting upstairs while guests were sitting quietly with closed palms.

It’s great to be able to look around the house while everyone was staying still. The cooking team had some difficulty in preparing food on a very wet day. But they did a very good job and the food was quite good. I found out that the husband of the birthday lady arranged this sixty-fifth years’ birthday for his wife.

I decided to go upstairs to observe the chanting ceremony by local monks. Their chanting was slightly different from traditional Thai chanting, I could hear the Laotian language quite often. We always invite nine monks to perform a blessing ceremony for auspicious occasion such as New Year’s celebration and birthdays.

There are formal and informal protocols in this small setting of birthday celebration. Even though I was not inclined to attend parties, I had to make an effort to be there. It’s a matter of ‘saving face’ and showing respect to my neighbours. Later the husband who used to be a senior engineer at a multinational company came to thank me for showing up. The ceremony and seatings upstairs were for the hosts and their family members and higher status guests including local elders.

I was very interested in the chanting ritual for making holy water. I noticed the chanting mantras were different from the Thai version and the senior monk made his own wax candles for the ceremony. The vibration from the chanting travels via the white cotton thread (called sai-siln). This cotton thread was wrapped around a copper bowl full of fresh water. The burning candle would be dripping while chanting was in full swing. At the end of the chanting, the candle was put off. After lunch, a junior monk would carry this copper bowl of blessed water to sprinkle all over the house and all the guests.

สุดสัปดาห์ที่แล้ว เราได้รับเชิญให้ไปงานวันเกิดของเพื่อนบ้าน ที่เป็นข้าราชการเกษียณในพื้นที่อีสาน เจ้าของวันเกิดอายุหกสิบห้าปีแต่ยังดูดีราวกับคนอายุห้าสิบต้นๆ งานนี้คุณสามีที่เคยเป็นวิศวกรใหญ่ที่อยู่ในบริษัทท่อส่งนํ้ามันและก๊าซ เป็นคนจัดงานให้ศรีภรรยา คนที่เป็นดีเจ ก็เลยอายุเกือบเจ็ดสิบปี ท่าทางหูตึงมากจึงเปิดเสียงดังไปจนถึงฝั่งลาว เราเลยต้องขอให้ลดกำลังเสียงลงเพราะแก้วหูจะระเบิด เรานึกขำที่พ่อบ้านจัดให้มีป้ายแขวนแสดงความยินดีให้ภรรยา ทำให้นึกถึงวัฒนธรรมของนักการเมืองภูธรที่ชอบ ติดป้ายภาพตนเองเต็มยศ มาทั้งคณะตามข้างถนน แล้วปล่อยให้ตากแดดตากลมจนซีดจาง เราจะไม่เคยเห็นป้ายแบบนี้ที่เมืองอังกฤษเลย แต่ป้ายในงานวันเกิดนี่ ดูแล้วอารมณ์ดีหลาย

เรายอมไปงานนี้เพราะ เป็นการให้เกียรติเพื่อนบ้านที่อุตส่าห์เชิญ แต่ฝนตกตลอดคืนทำให้ถนนลื่นมาก เราก็ออกไปเต็มยศ มีทั้งรองเท้ายางใส่ในสวน เสื้อกันฝนและร่มตีกอล์ฟขนาดใหญ่ เราก็สงสารคนทำอาหารท่ามกลางสายฝน และพื้นบ้านที่แสนลื่น แต่พวกเขาก็ทำได้ดีมาก ไม่ลื่นล้ม มีความอดทนสุภาพ และอาหารก็ค่อนข้างดีกว่าที่คาดหวังด้วย

เจ้าของงานวันเกิดแสนสวยและใจดี Birthday lady!

เราตั้งใจไปสายเพื่อให้คนส่วนใหญ่นั่งฟังพระสวดมนต์ เราจะได้มีเวลาเดินถ่ายรูปเล่น และอยู่เงียบๆโดยไม่ต้องคุยเจาะแจ๊ะกับแขกเหรื่อ เราก็ได้โอกาสขึ้นไปดูพิธีสวดมนต์วันเกิดแบบอีสานด้วย บทสวดมีภาษาลาวประปราย น่าสนใจมาก ส่วนที่เป็นภาษาบาลีแบบต้นฉบับก็พอได้ยินด้วย เราสนใจวิธีการฝั้นเทียนสามเล่มสำหรับทำนํ้ามนต์มาก คงต้องไปหาซื้อมาลองทำดูบ้าง พระสวดเก้ารูปตามธรรมเนียม แขกเหรื่อส่วนมากเป็นข้าราชการและอดีตนักการเมืองท้องถิ่น เราแอบกลับไปก่อนที่จะมีการร้องเพลงคาราโอเกะในตอนบ่าย ก็โชคดีมากที่พอถึงบ้าน ฝนก็ตกหนักมากอีกหนึ่งรอบ แขกที่ใส่รองเท้าหนังไปงานนี้ รองเท้าจมโคลนที่ทางเข้าบ้านทุกราย เงินจะได้สะพัดตามร้านขายรองเท้าสักที
