The Ever-Increasing Toxicity of Facebook, and How to Keep Steemit "Clean" of all the Drama.

in #spam7 years ago (edited)

It is my personal feeling as of late that the social media platform called Facebook has been rapidly devolving.

As the Steemit userbase grows exponentially now (at least, it sure seems like exponential growth) it's my hope that the platform will continue to promote a generally much higher caliber of conversation than Facebook or the pathetic excuse for "commnication" that is a YouTube comments section.

As "trolls" and spammy shit increase here in the platform, let's Steem clean it all into oblivion, and hang these time-waster exchanges out to dry, as it were.

Then again, whatever the free market wants! I am not afraid!

Just my opinon, though. Let me know what you think!

I think for Steemit to avoid the drama and the toxicity of other social networks the power is 100% in the upvote. If the community maintains a level of excellence by upvoting the best content and the best discussions via comments then we will send a clear message to everyone what type of community we want this to be and reward those who create it. The opposite is also true, bad content can be encouraged with an upvote too, I don't see it happening at this point but it's hard to predict what will happen socially when you bring 100s of millions of people together.

I hear this a lot, but who really determines what is good and bad. Everybody's tastes, interests, and perception of what is creative is different. I would say it is common sense not to vote what you don't like, I bet people just would ignore. Any levels of creativity should be encouraged: novice or pro.

Well, I think we all know what toxicity looks like. As long as that content sinks to the bottom and good discussion/content rises then this community should only get better.

But is that truly happening? With auto-voting and bots, posts are up-voted regardless of merit.

Oh believe me I know about the auto votes/bots like @randowhale. I think that manual votes are the majority, I hope that buying votes/bots don't get too crazy

I guess they could get upvotes from their supporters and opponents...

another point: now they do this for free on FB, they can do it for free here too. They don't need money because they need attention. And steem has fresh ears for their arguments

I think that actually the community has the final word on this subject, so we should try to encourage new users —like me...— to try to do their best on upload something that add value to Steem...

Well, yeah. The market has the final word, and that is the aggregate of individuals acting.

I have amazing friends on fb (who I am brow beating to join me here). But I am ruthless, I unfriend or unfollow at the slightest hint of negativity. On Steemit we have a mute button. I have used it!!!

Notbim following you. Saw your Disneyland post and now this. Great writing skills!

Cheers, @queeneleanor, followed back!

Agreed! It's my core belief that Steemit will 1st take a good portion of Facebooks audience, and in the short time to come after take it's market cap. Steemit is just way too addicting lol and once people find out the opportunity that this baby offers; we immediately become Facebook competition. ^_^ thanks for posting!

I agree. Keep the Steemit streets clean of garbage. I've seen the same guy lose his account twice on here for plagiarism, etc. (He mentioned it in his "second" intro post).
The best feature about Steemit is that only the good content survives...for the most part. Occasionally us minnows poop out a nugget of gold that goes unnoticed, but consistency of quality wins the day. Spam dies with Facebook!....and every other social platform.

I hardly log into my facebook account since i joined Steemit. This is a great community !
Thanks for sharing @kafkanarchy84
Would love to read more of your contents.
Upvoted and following you!

I'm curious...what is Voluntary Japan?

Hey, @mikej. Voluntary Japan is the name of my Voluntaryist initiative here in Japan. You can search "Voluntary Japan" and find the Facebook page and YouTube Channel, if you're interested in checking it out. Thanks for asking!

Okay, thank you!

Yes!! I'm on the same thought train. I have logged into FB about one time since I got Steem last week. There's just nothing there for me. Even after unfollowing, unfriending a bunch of ppl and following a whole lot of more interesting pages... it's so stale and just blegh. Steem is it where it's at. People who are awake, and able to have intelligent conversation... not "yasss girl, werk it" 🤢🤢🤢

I think you can take my upvote for granted, I truly love your posts!

Thanks so much, @princessmewmew. "Blegh" is the word for it, for sure!

Hehehe, you will get to know, I have my own dictionary of strange, made up words

Totally agreed ! The way how Steemit built is just insane . I hope when it's gonna be already mainstream, we as a early birds gonna show them this path of truly connecting and appreciating each other ! In comments :)
Such a great post !
