The day started out like any other, but by that night I was stumbling home covered in mud, missing a shoe with a patch over my left eye.

Sometimes the best laid plans have a mind of their own own. In a split moment, things don't just go 180 degrees but 540 degrees.

True I had felt butterflies in my stomach. I was done with the office politics and especially my superior Adam. I had held it in for a long enough. When he got the promotion and started giving me orders, I knew it was going to be rough ride. I gave myself one year and here I was 5 years later, still trying to resign.

We have had our fair share of harsh words but most times I had to swallow my pride just because of hierarchy. As the lift stopped at the 58th floor, my floor I took a deep breath. Today was the day I had to do it. I had been walking in every single day for the last 389 days, yes I have been counting, every day with a different way of broaching the subject. but I just never got around to it.

As I looked at my shoes, stepping out, I took another deep breath. My favourite green heels. I saved it for the days that I needed an extra lift. And I had kept it in amazing shape for a good 7 years. Yes, longer than I had worked here. And it was the shoes I had worn to the interview all those years ago. The shoe I had worn when I thought I was going to get the promotion, but Adam did.

2 - the interference.gif

I am not that into theater but I had to find something to study to please my parents

But today it will come in handy. I will put on my brave mask, I will wear my confidence skin, and I will channel Ms Cool Cucumber. I will walk in with my head held high. I will not let that mad man phase me out and I will tell him once and for all. Enough is enough.

I knocked on his door.

"Come in!"

I walked in and he had the biggest smile.

"Ah, you must have heard the good news already. How quickly news travels."

Ok, I wasn't expecting this. I wasn't sure what he was going on about. No need to pretend. I will just ask him. It's the best thing to do.

"I'm sorry Adam. I actually came to talk to you about something. I have not heard any news. I would -

"Have a seat. I am surprised big mouth Bertha, did not spill the beans already. She championed you all the way. And the board said ok. They will promote you and your idea for the creche gets the funds this year. "

I wasn't expecting this. I was speechless. I must have looked like a goldfish. This feeling of euphoria was not part of the plan and was throwing me off balance.

I was happy that the creche was finally approved. I don't have kids, but I championed the idea because it was the best thing for the mothers in the company. I had spent so much time with them, I realised if they didn't have to worry about their kids so much, if their kids were close enough to check on as and when they needed to, they would be able to concentrate on their work a little better.

3 - the dramatic twist.gif

What's the occasion?

He asked, suddenly noticing my shoes. "If you hadn't heard already, why did you wear your lucky green shoes."

Yes, the whole office knew about my shoes. News did travel fast. I starred at him, I had lost my mask and skin. I couldn't form my words. Not with this new development. The best thing to do is to just say it.

"I am quitting Adam! I am happy the creche has come through. I already know who can champion the project, but I am leaving."

I could almost see thoughts racing through his head. But I couldn't tell what it was he was thinking. Surely, he's happy that I am finally leaving. I am sure he had hoped for it many times.

"You mean, you are not going to finish what you started?" He walked swiftly over to me and took my arm. Not so gently. Before he walked out, he grabbed the pirate eye patch he kept on the mannequin head on his table. It was his little joke. Even when I am not around, I have one eye on you.

"Come!!"

"Where are we going?"

He didn't answer me as he walked to the lift. He pressed the button down. I wasn't sure what to say. He seemed to be in a weird place. He took us the the 23rd floor where the park for the tenants was. He stepped out, his arm still guiding me.

"Adam! Stop. I don't know ...."

"So you think you are going to start something and leave me to finish the dirty work?!!

He roughly avoided walking into the bench and my shoe got caught in the leg and the heel dislocated.

"My shoe!"

"Yes, your lucky shoe. Well, not so lucky today is it?

He placed the eye-patch on me. I held my ground. I wasn't going to let him intimidate me. He suddenly bent down, grabbed some mud from the planter and smeared it all over me. I was flabbergasted, even a little afraid.

"I hate kids. They are going to want to play pirate, and throw mud everywhere. Dirty noisy monsters. This is where they are building the creche. So the gremlins have the park. The park!!!! You know what that means?? I won't be able to come down here to smoke anymore. And you are leaving?"

I slapped him hard. "What is wrong with you?"

I kicked off the broken shoe which made it harder for me stand tall. I took out my resignation letter from my pocket, grabbed the hand that was holding me earlier, placed it in his hand, turned around and walked straight up to the office ..

Everybody stared for good reason, but daren't say anything. I grabbed my stuff and went straight home, limping all the way. Only when I got home, I realised the eye patch was still on, the horrible taste in my mouth was the mud and my one shoe was holding up.

I laughed out loud at the absurdity of it all. Gaaaah..... Good riddance to bad rubbish!!!

This is a Weekend Freewrite. Three prompts back to back, one after the other. 5 minutes each (but the last prompt prompted me to go a little longer) and they have to make sense of course. I missed a couple of daily prompts, "mask" and "describe your shoes" and I have included them both into the story. Hope you enjoyed reading it as much as I did. Want to know what the other author's did with the Weekend Prompts, then head on over to @marrianewest and for more goodies, check out @FreeWriteHouse.
