RE: What is Art and Why Does it Matter?

in #art7 years ago

I can appreciate many of your points, and did, right up until you referred to humans as "... apes wearing clothes and pretending to be civilised."

Last I checked, apes don't make art that is anywhere near the complexity of that created by humans. To me, art is creativity - the ability to make something new, to display what could be, or to explore new ideas. That takes rational thought, and an inquisitive mind, one that is open to novel ways of thinking and expressing.

Many artists treat the human mind as a barrier to creativity, but as you mentioned, art is found in many places - most of which could never have existed without the aesthetic creativity of the mind.

That is not any kind of scientific argument. Whether you like it or not apes are closely related to humans and to suggest that it is not so because they don't create the same degree of sophisticated art is ridiculous.

Further I doubt you ever checked if Apes create art. Some actually do.

I wasn't trying to make any type of scientific argument. I'm well aware that humans evolved from apes. I'm just disgusted that your view of humans is that we're like apes wearing clothes. When's the last time you saw an ape creating a skyscraper? Or an iPhone?

Sure, they may express themselves in some sort of artistic form. But it's nothing like the art humans create. Unless you count "modern" art. That looks like it was made by apes.

Why would you be disgusted? That just makes my point. People pretend to be all profound and superior but they are not.
