Jesus Heals a Man with Demon
Disclaimer: This calligraphy is made by yours truly. The information below was my notes from last Sunday’s preaching by Pastor TJ Caparros.
In Mark 5, Jesus heals a man with many demons, in fact, he calls himself legion, for they were many.
In the story, the man possessed was in isolation, without credibility and had lost his decency, he was self destructive and hopeless. But as soon as Jesus stepped into this Gentile area, the demons knew His authority, they knew that right there and then, Jesus can throw them out to hell.
Jesus knew the demons but he asked him by name to bring out the magnitude and complexity of the case and most especially to show His power over the thousands of demons.
Question, why did Jesus allow the demons to go to the pigs? There were three points.
- To show the destructive nature of these demons.
This was displayed when they throw the pigs out into the steep bank and the sea.
The devil only comes to steal, kill and destroy.
- To give a visible proof that the demons had left the man.
This was displayed when the man was found to be on his right mind, giving him back his credibility and the gentiles seeing the damage of the pigs.
- This proves the massive supernatural power of Jesus over the thousands of demons.
The legion of demons went to two thousand pigs and that means they were definitely many.
Its amazing how Powerful Jesus is but more importantly how he considers one soul more important. He is willing to make sacrifices for one single soul. Jesus is like that shepherd who left the 99 to look for his lost sheep.
And what was very surprising was how Jesus called the onced demoniac to be his first missionary, a gentile, with no theological background and was onced a person wihout a credibility.
As an application, this story proves that Jesus can take a life of ruin, a messed up life and make it a testimony for him and for his glory.
As Christians, we are all called to be his witness. Remember that nothing is in vain when we do things for our Lord Jesus Christ.
God can use us despite our past, despite our limitations and despite our weaknesses. Once we are saved, we have a story to tell.
