How should the university prepare the engineer?
To begin, I must clarify that the university doesn't grant anything that makes the person "special" so that it's successful or develops with excellence, this is a tool that can be well used as wasted, everything depends absolutely on the individual.
Having this clear, I can synthesize the aspects in which the university can and should be key to helping students to face, use and emerge victorious from technological changes in: showing them the reality.
Why face? It is possible that the changes displace him as a professional and is no longer necessary, the engineer must face these adversities and reinvent himself, innovate, so that his intelligence can never be dispensable.
Why use? It seems to me that this is the easiest; the engineer must use technologies as a springboard to boost his career, that way his knowledge will be increasingly valuable and, why not? Start a new business in a existing technological field or a new one created by him.
Why come out victorious? It's the culmination of the two previous ones, to make mistakes isn't bad because it is learned from it, but it's clear that what we want is success and education is a fundamental pillar of it.
How will reality show? I have thought of three activities: shock therapy (like beyond scared straight), freedom and field work.
Beyond scared straight.
I think we've all seen that shocking A&E reality show in which they take young delinquents to see the reality that awaits them if they continue down the wrong road, something similar should be done in universities.
I'm not talking about taking students to prisons, no, I mean to show them the reality: How work in a company? How work alone? What should be the expected performance? How much will the decisions affect the materialization of the projects?
You can't prepare someone truly successful from the desk, the students should know experienced people, work with them, they should undertake projects from the beginning of their career and be wrong, especially the latter, screw up deep, that's where you will find true learning. .
Freedom.
I think that, this is the most important aspect, since it's the only one that promotes the most important skill of every professional: Critical thinking. Without this skill, how will it be possible to solve a problem? Will it have to depend on third parties to distinguish between what is ethical and what is not?
Most think that the university has a lot of freedom, which is where the ideas arise, but this is false, a large part of the teachers only impose their point of view and, whoever disagrees, is wrong, the debates they don’t exist, they’re feared.
However, the worst enemy of freedom, is the student community, they think that virtue and truth are in the "majority", so if you go against the grain: you will be labeled the worst and censored.
Fieldwork (a lot of field work).
From the first semester to the last the students must know how and in what they're going to work, it seems to me a nonsense that this is only at the end of the race, there're even times that it's not obligatory.

Don't go to finish like this intern. Source.
What worth some new graduates without experience? What if, when they graduate, they feel that this is not their thing? Many questions like these can arise during the whole career and, an effective solution, would be to take the students to the real work, so that the reality is observed.
This way, those who, if they like it, are motivated to think about how to improve and innovate in different areas of their careers, choose which path they want to follow, that is, in which they will specialize, do research since the first semesters, thus they'll have a lot of time and that their degree work be, preferably, some innovation and not a research work.
The student will have the opportunity to make many contacts which will facilitate a possible future entreprenuership, he could acquire a more humble attitude since, starting from the bottom, the student will have contact with all the people of the companies.
These proposals seem to me, not only sensible, but also necessary to prepare better professionals and, therefore, a better society for all, more productive and innovative.
