Part 10: Epic Beaches of the Eastern Australian Coast (Wilsons Prom)

in #travel7 years ago

Epic! What a word to describe 2017 for me! I’m still waiting for my Central American photos to be recovered, so hang tight! I thought I would share my mother’s day experience with my family back home in Melbourne.

We ventured to Wilsons Promontory National Park, a beautiful piece of coastal line 2.5 hours drive from Melbourne. We stayed in an Airbnb about 30 min outside of the national park and had a spectacular view of the coast, take a look!

View from our Airbinb where we played games and drank wine!

This place has a really good variety of outdoor activities. Whether you are into day walking, multiple day hiking, walking along the beaches, rock climbing, kayaking, surfing, fishing, mountain bike riding or camping long term behind the beaches there is a whole lot of variety to choose from for whatever your taste! We are really blessed to live such a beautiful place here without having to worry about bears (seriously I can’t handle the unseen danger!).

Our first day consisted for of day walking from Norman Beach and followed the trail around the coast line. It’s about a 2-3 hour return hike that offers some really nice contrast of ocean and granite rock cliffs with hypnotic iron streaks through them.

Our second day consisted of checking out some more easy going coastal walks (I think the wine got to everyone enough so that we didn’t climb the Mt Oberon). If you like to surf then head on over to Wilsons Prom! There were some gnarly 6-7ft waves rolling in that day and you’ll get to enjoy some beautiful scenery while waiting for the breakers.

A few tips before making your trip down here.
-Pretty obvious but Sunday is the busiest day for the park, plan for during the week of possible
-Park entry is free, only need to pay for overnight hiking and camping
-The beaches are not patrolled by surf life savers, please don’t be that person who gets sucked out by the rip and know your swimming capabilities
-Limited phone service, plan your day ahead and let someone know where you are going that day
-We have a hole in the ozone layer above us, always wear 30+SPF sunscreen while in Australia or you will get burned in 15 minutes. Even on cloudy days!
-We drive on the left. Enough said?
-Being caught with a phone in your hand while driving is a $500 fine, avoid snapchatting while driving (I saw this so much)

Above all come visit Australia without worrying about being killed! Snakes and spiders are present but over exaggerated in their prevalence. It's a stunning stunning country with loads of great things to see, come check it!

They all look like great places, but I guess I'll have to make my way to Australia first. I have friends/relatives there, but I have yet to visit. Hopefully I will soon.
