What Engineering Student Should Learn About Before Visiting Engineering Workshop-- Workshop Safety
Hello campus friends,
It is an honor to come before this great community that helps to reunite students all over the world.
While thinking about campus life ( Engineering aspect), something came to mind.
I notice that some engineering student have caused themselves harm due to ignorance while in the workshop and this ignorance have cost some their lives.
Some lecturers assume that students would have been taught all the things they need to know before entering a workshop, and as such they fail to enlighten the students do's and don'ts of a workshop practice.
Please follow along as we learn how to safeguard ourselves in the workshop.
WHAT IS A WORKSHOP
A workshop can be explained to be a room where construction, design and building of engineering equipment are done.
It can also be explained to be a room filled with engineering equipment all for the aim of training upcoming engineers/students.
A workshop is usually filled harmful equipments like knife, blades, nails, pins and all sorts of sharp objects that if not careful can injure students.
Having considered this, let's proceed to the next stage
SAFETY IN THE WORKSHOP
Safety can be explained to be the absence of danger.
It is a condition where an individual feel free from hazard.
Safety in a workshop can be explained to be ways in which workshop practitioner ensure that they are free from accidents in a workshop.
Safety in a workshop should be the most important ethics that students should be taught before allowed into the workshop.
To show the Importance of safety in a workshop, a workshop without safety equipment is not allowed to be established, and any one caught without safety equipment is liable to punishment by the legal authorities.
ACCIDENT IN A WORKSHOP
Accident can be explained to an unwanted, unforeseen occurrence that usually cause harm to the well-being of humans.
It can also be explained to be a feature of the human that always result in disability in the human form.
Truth be told, most accident that occurs in a workshop are incident that can be prevented, as many occur due to the ignorance of student, and lack of proper orientation.
Although some occur due to faulty machines, probably a loose bolt, weak engine etc.
The below shows a list of some sources of accident in a workshop.
- Grinding wheels
- Intermittent feed mechanism
- Spiked cylinders
- Knives and saw blade
- Revolving cutting tools.
The above mentioned are tools found in a workshop and if not handled properly, can cause accident in the workshop.
PREVENTIVE MEASURES AGAINST ACCIDENT IN A WORKSHOP
Inorder to ensure smooth running of a workshop and to ensure workers safety, there are some safety rules that each student/worker should adhere to, they are:
- USE OF PPE:
PPE which is an acronym for personal protective equipment refers to the outfit that engineers are expected to always be on while in the workshop.
This outfit consist of an overall garment which help protect the skin against splash of chemicals, goggles which help protest the eyes from dust particles, hand glove which help protect the hands, safety boot which helps protect the feet from sharp objects and more importantly an helmet which help protect the head from falling objects.
The regular use of PPE helps to reduce the rate of injury in an accident and most times prevent the occurrence of an accident.
- PROPER STORAGE OF WORKSHOP TOOLS:
Another Important factor that can help prevent accident is the proper storage of tools.
Improperly kept tools are one of the leading causes of accident in a workshop, if working tool is not kept well, a student/worker can easily hit it, thus causing him serious injury.
Or imagine if there is a spill of oil on the ground, which is not meant to be, any student working in a workshop can easily slip and die.
We need to ensure to always keep our working tool properly.
- PROPER LIGHTING CONDITION:
This is another factor that if lacking can lead to accident in a workshop.
There should always be constant light in a workshop, as without light, it will be difficult for students to see the workshop environment clearly.
Without proper lighting condition, a student can unknowingly step on nail or any sharp object.
Truth be told, the Importance of light in a workshop cannot be overemphasized.
- PROPER VENTILATION OF THE WORKSHOP:
This is yet another factor that helps to reduce the rate of accident, yet many are ignorant of it.
When the workshop is not well ventilated, it makes the students so uncomfortable and as such they do things carelessly.
This careless act of them contribute to rate of accident in the workshop.
CONCLUSION
Adherence to safety rules in the workshop should be the priority of all students in the workshop.
Lack of adherence to these rules can lead to loss of lives of workers in the workshop.
Any student caught disobeying these rules should be immediately dismissed from the workshop, as such careless act could cost lives.
This is very educative and live saving. Although am not an engineering student, but I believe I have learnt something from this. Thanks for sharing with us!
I'm really glad you have learnt something, thanks for visiting 💙
