ADVANTAGES OF RESISTANCE COLLISION



I wouldn't spend much time here but will rather go straight to the point and discuss on the different advantages of resistance collision.

  • CRYPTOGRAPHIC SALTS

Cryptographic salt is one of the major advantages of resistance collision, and one of it's primary use is the enhancement of the security of password hashing, and also the prevention of various forms of attack.

Explained below are ways in which cryptographic salts forms as a benefit of resistance collision.

PREVENTS RAINBOW TABLE ATTACKS

Cryptographic Salts plays a huge role in preventing rainbow table attacks by introducing complexity and uniqueness into the password hashing process.

Here's its working process

1.) Hash function basics:

With rainbow table attacks, attackers tend to compute and store a large number of password hashes in a table.

These tables are made up of commonly used passwords or password patterns.

2.) Salt Introduction:

When a cryptographic salt is introduced and used, a unique and random value is generated for each user's password.

This salt and the users password is then combined before hashing, this thus implies that if two users have the same password, their cryptographic salt is different.

3.) Unique Hashes:

And as a result, the password of each user is hashed with a unique salt, and this resulting hash is also unique.

And since the salt is different and random for every users, it becomes impossible for malicious users to precompute a rainbow table that contains all salted password possible combination.

4.) COMPLEXITY:

Rainbow table is dependent on the predictability of password hashes but salts on the other hand adds some elements of unpredictability.

For every salt value attackers would need to create a rainbow table which is impossible due to the sheer number of potential salts.

5.) INCREASED EFFORT:

The computational effort that is needed to perform a successful rainbow table attack is significantly increased by cryptographic salt.

Without the knowledge of which salt is used for a particular individual, attackers ought to continue attempting the hash for each salt individually, thus slowing down the attack process and making it much more difficult.
