APPLICATION OF COLLISION RESISTANCE



In our last discussion, we learnt about the application of collision resistance and it was there we made mention of message digest.

However, we shall continue on other sub-applications under message digest.

  • MESSAGE DIGEST:

In our last discussion, we understand message digest to be a fixed size string of characters which can be generated through the application of cryptographic hash functions into an input message.

Let's examine further application of resistance collision on message digest.

PASSWORD STORAGE

The secured storage of password is of paramount Importance in this space, especially in systems where user's account is being managed.

Here, instead of directly storing their passwords, these systems rather store their message digest.

And when a user tries to login in, the digest of the password entered by the user is calculated by the system and also compared to the already stored digest, and if they allign, access is granted to a user.

The importance of collision resistance here is that it prevents attackers from searching and discovering several passwords that produces the same digest, as this would lead to unauthorized access to a user's account.

DATA DEDUPLICATION

In content addressable and data storage systems, data deduplication is known to be a process whereby identification and elimination of redundant data is done, just to save storage space.

Message digest are used in the identification of duplicate data, and collision resistance on the other hand ensures that, two pieces of data with similar content must possess different digest, thus preventing them from being termed as a duplicate file.

BLOCKCHAIN TECHNOLOGY

The blockchain technology is highly dependent on message digest for the security of it's data and the creation of links between blocks.

In this context, collision resistance is very important, the Immutability nature of the blockchain is highly dependent on the fact that once a data is stored in a block, it cannot be altered.

If there were to be an occurrence of collision in the blockchain, an attacker would be able to produce a different set of data with the same message digest as the legitimate block, and this could weaken the security of the blockchain.

However, with the help of resistance collision, such attack won't be possible.

PUBLIC KEY INFRASTRUCTURE

Public key infrastructure is known to br be the framework that manages certificates and digital keys, including public keys certificate.

Here, resistance collision is very important as it ensures that a certificate cannot be easily impersonated.

If an attacker can find two identities with same digest, it would be possible for him to impersonate a user's certificate.

However, with the use of resistance collision, such a thing is not possible.
