Cryptocurrency Dabbling: Choosing Tedium

Right now, I’m in a couple of slogs. My cryptocurrency investment is plodding toward what appears to be its eventual evanescence with a hippo’s grace. I’m taking on new responsibilities and projects at work, and so I don’t have time or energy to spare on my hobbies. Even in that world, I’m learning to use some new tools and techniques, so even when I do get time—I don’t— I’m just learning, and experimenting, not really producing anything.

In short, my schedule is intense, I’m working as hard as I feel like I can in a bunch of different ways, and for all that strain, nothing is getting better. The snow’s not really melting, if you will.

Why It’s Good

Here is as close as I think I can get to a helpful perspective: what’s changing for the better beneath the chilly unconcern of the ice is me. I’m gaining new capacities and abilities, even if it’s a painstaking process. I’m just in the biting phase of a constantly recurring cycle in life where I bite off more than I can chew, and then drive myself nuts chewing it.

This isn’t a standalone skill, of course. Learning to think like a bulldozer and just push ‘til the bricks buckle is, by itself, a pretty useless skill. Power without direction. Direction seems to me to be a product of vision and strategy—knowing what you ultimately hope to accomplish or become, and making sure your wall-crushing aligns with that goal.

Looking Closer

Chances are, if your life is tedious, and you wake up feeling like your jaw’s on the verge of giving up, there’s a reason you got into it in the first place. We, like objects in space, seek the path of least resistance, and the only reason we wade into vast quantities of mind-numbing monotony and busyness is that it’s the shortest path between us and a goal.

So I’m staying the course, and chewing ‘til it’s chewed.
