[ENG-SPN] When a picture was worth a thousand words / Cuando una imagen valía más que mil palabras

Possibly, the approach that an image is worth a thousand words, has not been more objective and accurate, than in those medieval times in which access to Culture was exclusively restricted to very specific elites. Given that the society of the time was based on solidly established estates, at the top, together with the king, the Church, given its role as mediator between God and men, exercised considerable power.

And it was the Church that established, under its spiritual power, what the people should know and know, which was basically reduced to the New Testament and above all, to the most relevant episodes of the life and Passion of Jesus Christ.

That is why they appeared, with greater or lesser subtlety -understood the latter, from a merely stylistic sense- on the covers of the main churches and cathedrals, which by default, became the metaphorical 'textbooks' to which the public had access town.

Posiblemente, el planteamiento de que una imagen vale más que mil palabras, no haya sido más objetivo y certero, que en aquellos tiempos medievales en los que el acceso a la Cultura estaba exclusivamente restringido a unas élites muy concretas. Dado que la sociedad de la época se basaba en estamentos sólidamente establecidos, en la cima, junto al rey, la Iglesia, dado su papel de mediadora entre Dios y los hombres, ejercía un poder considerable.

Y era la Iglesia la que establecía, bajo su potestad espiritual, lo que el pueblo debía de saber y conocer, que se reducía, básicamente, al Nuevo Testamento y sobre todo, a los episodios más relevantes de la vida y Pasión de Jesucristo.

Por eso figuraban, con mayor o menor sutileza -entendida ésta última, desde un sentido meramente estilístico- en las portadas de las principales iglesias y catedrales, que, por defecto, se convirtieron en los metafóricos ‘libros de texto’ a los que tenía acceso el pueblo.
