Si ya los primeros monasterios, aun perdidos en los más recónditos valles y montañas, en cuyas candilejas, los monjes copistas recuperaban, inclinados sobre sus vetustos scriptoriums los aspectos culturales de un Occidente sumido en las tinieblas de la Alta Edad Media, constituyendo, por ello, los primeros faros culturales, las catedrales, elementos de un estilo completamente nuevo e innovador, cuyos orígenes, fueran éstos o no importados por los cruzados que regresaban de Tierra Santa, continúan siendo un apasionante enigma, conservaron y ampliaron esa categoría hasta niveles insospechados y desgraciadamente, poco comprendidos hoy en día.
