Milenios antes de que los piratas atracaran en los puertos del Caribe, inspirando con sus atrevidas hazañas a la legión de guionistas de la factoría Disney, los vikingos ya asolaban estas costas y los romanos, después de las azarosas batallas conocidas como las Guerras Cántabras, establecieron aquí una de sus señoriales ciudades: la latina Flavióbriga, conocida hoy en día como Castro Urdiales. Apenas queda huella de esa memorable civitas que rendía culto a Júpiter y al emperador Vespasiano y en cuyo puerto atracaban las poderosas trirremes repletas de legionarios, para después regresar a Roma, cargadas hasta los bordes de las más variopintas mercancías, donde no escaseaban, por cierto, los metales preciosos.

Sí queda, no obstante para nuestro deleite, huella de esa otra villa medieval que se fue asentando alrededor de uno de los principales puertos del Cantábrico, que no sólo vieron cómo, a partir del descubrimiento de los supuestos restos del Apóstol Santiago, cientos, por no decir miles de peregrinos pisaban el sagrado suelo de las Asturias de Santillana, bajo la atenta vigilancia, no sólo de los funcionarios reales, ávidos siempre de ese afán recaudatorio que continúa vigente hasta nuestros días, sino también, de la vigilancia soslayada de aquellos misteriosos caballeros de la cruz paté, los templarios, cuyos arquitectos posiblemente colaboraran con esa maravilla del Arte Gótico, que es su fascinante iglesia de la Concepción y dispusieran, aparte de unos restos apenas reconocibles tierra adentro, de los altos muros del castillo-faro, para determinar las idas y venidas de las naves de su propia flota: aquella misma, que, junto con su misterioso tesoro, desapareció también en los enigmáticos abismos de la Historia.
