St. John the Evangelist tells us. "We love, because he loved us first." (1Jn 4,19). In this affirmation of San Juan, we understand perfectly, what is the origin of human love, of that capacity that we have to love and that we are granted as a reflection the supernatural or divine love, which is the only existent love, because God is only one and immutable. And writing this, let us indicate what are the characteristics of these two kinds of loves.
The first thing to note is that supernatural love, has three important characteristics, in addition to other several of which human love lacks, and these are: Firstly its perfection, secondly its intensity and thirdly its immutability and unlimited or lack of limits. The three characteristics emanate from the very essence of God and are only attributable to supernatural love, not human love. for human love lacks them, as we can see later on.
Supernatural love is perfect, because it emanates from the supreme perfection that is God himself. It was Our Lord who left us saying: "Be perfect as my heavenly Father is perfect." (Mt 5,48). If we look at ourselves and look around, we soon realize that men, some more and others less, but all lack perfection. Perhaps the human race has advanced something towards perfection, from the moment in which the Lord uttered these words, but on this subject there is a division of opinions and while some think that any past time was better than what we now live, there are also people who they are more optimistic and think that humanity is closer today to the evangelical postulates. This only God knows!
What we can not doubt, is that God is the highest perfection, and this perfection has the supernatural love that He generates us, which is in turn perfect, a quality that does not have human love, Our human love, is variable, because variables are all of us, some more and others less and generally our human loves are always interested and are in search of compensation that can even become sinfully for money.
Our human love will always be more perfect the more we love God, even if we are capable of loving others only in terms of love for God, because if we love, for example for humanitarian reasons exclusively marginalized from God, we are falling into a absurd philanthropy. The perfection of our human love, so that it is as much as possible, must always pass through the sieve of the previous love of God, the opposite is self-deceived.
Second, there is the issue of the intensity with which God loves and the poor intensity that we are capable of developing. More than once we have heard the term: Fire of God's love. In the consciousness of one who is immersed in the divine love of God there is no deception, no prejudices of caste or creed, or limitations of any kind. When you experience that divine love, you will see that there is no essential difference between a flower and a beast or between one human being and another: you will be in communion with nature and you will love all humanity equally.
To reach the divine realization, it is necessary to have compassion for all beings, because God himself is full of that quality. Those who possess a sensitive heart are able to put themselves in the place of other people, identify with their suffering and try to alleviate it.
To develop pure and unconditional love between husband and wife, between parents and children, between friends, between oneself and others, is the lesson we have come to learn on earth.
To desire perfection for the beloved, and to experience a pure feeling of joy in thinking of that soul, is divine love; and that is the love that exists in true friendship.
The love of God, the love of the Spirit, is an intoxicating love. Once you have experienced it, it will lead you ever deeper into the realms of the eternal. That love will never be snatched from your heart, but it will burn there, and in that fire you will find the great magnetism of the Spirit that attracts others to you and also attracts whatever you really need or want.
