Little Swan (Cygnus columbianus) - Arctic North America, Europe and Asia, winter in the south.

Trumpeter Swan (Cygnus buccinator) - Subarctic North America, winters in the south.
Vulgar swan (Cygnus olor) - Temperate Europe and Asia, resident.
Black Swan (Cygnus atratus) - Australia, resident or nomadic.
Black Swan of New Zealand (Cygnus sumnerensis †) - Possibly Chatham Islands, extinct in prehistoric times; also considered subspecies of Cygnus atratus (Cygnus atratus sumnerensis). In New Zealand the Australian form Cygnus atratus was later introduced.
Black-necked swan (Cygnus melancoryphus) - Southeast of South America, winters in the north.
Coscoroba Swan (Coscoroba coscoroba) - South and center of South America, winters in the north.
It could lead to confusion with the goose swan or goose-swan (Anser cygnoides), typical of East Asia, which is not properly a swan.

Swans have a predominant plant diet, usually feed on aquatic plants that get to sink their heads into the water. They also eat grains that they get and, occasionally, they consume one or another amphibian or aquatic invertebrate such as mollusks, insects or worms.
