AAA Review - Wonder Woman (2017) - A first female Superhero movie

For the first time, a Superhero movie featuring a female lead is used in the 2017 blockbuster Wonder Woman. Gal Gadot star in this DCEU franchise playing Diana, the princess from the mythical Amazon. The film received mostly positive reviews and is regarded as the best DC Extended Universe movie. It grossed over $800 million in box office worldwide.

Quick Plot

The film is set in the early 1900s during the First World War. The mythical Themyscira is an island isolated from the rest of the world where all its inhabits are female only. Legend has it that Zeus created the island and the Amazonians to protect mankind from Ares, a fallen god who sworn to destroy mankind. Zeus left the Amazonians a weapon known as Godkiller to protect mankind on the return of Ares.

The Amazonians were discovered by a British pilot, Steve Trevor, accidentally during a crash landing. Diana (Wonder woman), princess of the Amazons, was convinced that the World War was the work of Ares and she insisted on following Steve to the front lines so that she can stop Ares. The reluctant pilot, with a secret mission to accomplished, brought Diana back to London. Soon, he witnessed the amazing strength and super power of Diana and became convinced that she is no just an ordinary woman.

The movie quickly moves towards the Germans stronghold where Diana is certain that the German General Ludendorff is Ares in disguise. She killed her easily but was left baffled as to why the War hasn't ended. This was when the real Ares appeared before her and attempt to recruit Diana into his cause.

A fierce fight broke out between Wonder Woman and Ares but the evil god was too strong for her to handle, even destroying the holy sword which she believed was the Godkiller. It was then that Ares revealed to Diana that she, is actually the Godkiller herself. At the same time, Steve was trying to stop a biochemical disaster and sacrificed himself by flying the plane loaded with bio-weapons into the sky and exploded. Diana was outrage with grief and unleashed extraordinary abilities, directing Ares own lightning back into him and destroying the evil god.

Review

Compared to other recent DC movies which tends to be darker theme, Wonder Woman is a light hearted superhero movie. It reminds me of the Captain America: The First Avenger with similar storyline lines set in the World War and a romance that did not survive.

Gal Gadot is the perfect cast for Wonder Woman, playing the strong yet innocent Amazon princess. Her interpretation of Wonder Woman is spot on, even as good as RDJ as Tony Stark in the MCU. I am sure Gadot will reprised her role for as long as Wonder Woman remains in the DC Extended Universe. Her performance with Chris Pine (Steve Trevor) was full of humour too. However, the antagonist is rather weak. We only get to see Ares in the last 10 minutes of the show.

Wonder Woman had also set a gold standard in female superhero movie. Future movies with similar concept (eg Captain Marvel) will most definitely be benchmarked against it and like it or not, they will pale in comparison.
