AAA Review - A Star Is Born (2018)

Bradley Cooper and Lady Gaga star in this classic romantic musical remake of "A Star is born". The film, released in 2018, was a blockbuster success and awarded with multiple accolades, including 8 nominations at the Academy Awards. Both Cooper and Gaga nominated for Best Actor and Best Actress respectively. "Shallow", performed by the duo, won the Best Original Song award.

Quick Plot

Jackson Maine (Bradley Cooper), accomplished country music singer struggling with alcohol and drugs abuse, discovered Ally (Lady Gaga) in a bar after performing a concert. The waitress and singer-songwriter quickly caught Jackson's attention with her powerful voice and talent in songwriting. Jackson invites Ally to his concert the following day and, after initial reluctance, performed an amazing live debut of the song "Shallow"

The duo formed a romantic relationship thereafter. Ally toured alongside Jackson for much of his tours and was soon discovered by producer Rez, who went on to sign her for a major singing contract. Ally's fame rose quickly as she moves from country music into Pop. Eventually reached stardom when she gets nominated for Best Newcomer at the Grammys Awards. At the awards ceremony, an intoxicated Jackson brought huge embarrassment upon Ally and himself on stage.

As the duo's relationship soured, Jackson checked himself into rehabilitation for a two months period. A sober Jackson returns home to reunite with Ally but was warned by Rez to stay away as he only holds Ally back. Ally, however, was never ready to give up on Jackson and even threatens to cancel her Europe tour if she can't bring Jackson along.

The movie ended in tragedy, like the previous two rendition, as Jackson chose to end his own life.

Review

Watched this on a flight home on lousy audio but the live performance of all songs were powerful enough to leave a strong impression. Every musical piece used in the film were recorded live, according to the producers.

I find it really appropriate to cast Lady Gaga as the lead actress in A Star is born because she is one of the top artiste in real life and genuinely portrayed Ally's singing performance. The film also focused on Ally's looks and how she would not be a success, but all that proved unfounded because in real life, she did.

Though the film is A Star is born, it is however all about the story of Bradley Cooper's character and his struggles over alcohol and drugs. Bradley Cooper is a great actor who had played many different roles and Jackson Maine was probably one of his best. It's a regret he did not get nominated for Best Director at the Academy's.

This movie is a classic romantic drama with a tragic ending. A good watch if you like romance and has the time to pass, like I did on the plane.
