My Adventure on Trail of the Coeur d'Alenes

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

The Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes is one of the most spectacular trails in the western United States. It was named one of the 25 top trails in the nation in 2012 by the Rails to Trails Conservancy. The trail runs for 72 miles on smooth asphalt that is perfect for road bikers, in-line skaters, walkers and wheelchairs. source: https://parksandrecreation.idaho.gov/parks/trail-coeur-d-alenes

This is a beautiful trail that follows lake Coeur d'Alene, then goes through the chain lakes, then up the Coeur d'Alene River. Here is a picture I took in the chain lakes region some time ago. (The remaining pictures are all from yesterday).

This picture is where I took a break for some food. There was a little turtle in the wetland below this, but I could not get a good picture of him.

I road from Harrison to the Snake Pit and back, a 64 mile journey on my lovely bike. The Snake Pit has been a local landmark for over 135 years. Located at the fork of the Coeur d’Alene River, it has served as a boom-town bar, railroad layover, hotel, house of ill repute and starting point for loggers and miners of yesteryear. https://www.snakepitidaho.com/ Here I am at my turn around at the Snake Pit:

Over the course of the ride, I saw quail (tons of baby ones), blue herons, a snake, two turtles, eagles, and other woodland creatures. This next picture shows where the trail crosses the Coeur d'Alene River. It showcases how this trail was once a railroad.

The ride back was tough battling winds but I made it back. Here is my gps and bike statistics; it shows all the lakes I went by, pretty much there is always lake or river or wetlands:

Then there is post bike ride beer carb loading at a watering hole by the lake. There was a spring break type party going on in Harrison called the boat regatta. It looked awesome.

I hope you all enjoyed. If you are into biking, this trail is world class.
