A big decision to make: Full commitment to TravelFeed

in #travelfeed5 years ago

Today, I had to make an important decision. I am studying Business Information Systems in the fifth semester, which basically is a combination of computer science and business administration. While this is certainly a field that I am interested in, university has always undercut my expectations. To be fair, I have also had a few very interesting lectures and projects, but overall, university teaches very little skills that are of practical use. To compensate that, there is a mandatory practical semester.

During this practical semester, I would be required to work at a company for a minimum of 8 hours a day over a period of 95 working days (~5 months). One thing that I always appreciated about university is having time for side projects during the semester. Since the end of last year, I have taught myself JavaScript and have been working full-time on the TravelFeed platform and pursued my studies on the side. Doing an internship would mean putting the development of TravelFeed on hold, since founding a company, developing a token economy and continuing development of our platform will occupy all of my time and is not possible to do as a side project. I have asked my university to credit building my own business as a practical semester, but today I got the following reply:

During the approval and final acceptance of your practical semester, we have to check and comply with formal conditions such as employment contract, training plan, weekly reports, working and attendance days and last but not least the certificate. Unfortunately, we cannot guarantee this in your desired case.

This is Germany after all and the university system is not known for flexibility, so this reply did not surprise me, especially since I had been told before that there is no history of cases like this having been approved. As a consequence, I have decided to put my studies on hold for the time being. When I am finished with my exams at the end of this month, I will be fully committed to TravelFeed for the next 7 months, then I will reevaluate.

I don't plan on settling down and applying for a job that would require me to have a bachelor's degree anytime soon, but it can't hurt to have a degree as a backup plan. I still have the intention to finish my studies eventually, but we are serious about TravelFeed and if TravelFeed becomes as successful as we believe it will, finishing my degree will have to wait.

Thank you so much! :) Btw, I will implement categories in TravelFeed soon, what do you think about a "market" category that includes posts tagged with #marketfriday?

You're making me nervous now Julian .. TravelFeed HAS TO BE a great SUCCESS, otherwise the guilt will eat me up. So happy that we get to work on this together, I couldn't have asked for a better partner!!!

We will make TravelFeed a huge success :) Great working with you as well!

Also .. I know where that last picture is from .. MACEDONIA?????!!!

Check the post on TravelFeed, remember how I implemented photo captions a few days ago? They are actually not visible on other UIs, a perk for TtravelFeed users ;)

@JPPhotography, @for91days your commitment is the reason why I believe in this project guys. Best wishes from Lithuania! :)

Wow, a big decision and exciting. Thanks for all the work on travel feed and bringing together quality posts from all over the world. Great picture too.

Thanks! I took the photo in Macedonia two weeks ago, the light was amazing

Wow! Big decision indeed, all the best of luck to you!

Big decision indeed. Wishing you and TravelFeed all the best my friend! May all the energy and time you have put and will put in this amazing project bring the results you hope for :)

Thank you, Petr! I am sure it will :)

Great commitment, and best of luck!

Very tough decision but I think you made the right one! It’s good that you could pause your study for several months!

Good luck!

Thanks! I strongly believe that this is the right decision, for me and for TravelFeed :)

Such a big decision to have to make. Pity you can't use your own business for the experience needed for your degree. I'm not familiar with #Travelfeed but will have to look into it now. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

You can check it on https://travelfeed.io/, we just launched our Beta last week :)

Thanks @jpphotography. Fabulous site. When I logged in I found that one of my #WednesdayWalk articles had been published at Travelfeed. Will use the tag now when I finally do the writeup for Sydney's Sculpture by the Sea. ♥︎♥︎⚖️♥︎♥︎

Awesome, we can't wait for your post!

Taking my head off for this decision! I'm now back at normal life and have some time left - If there is anything how I can support you guys - Let me know!

You could join our curation team and cover one day a week. On that day, you would read all TravelFeed posts published that day and select the best ones to be featured or honoured. With the changes we introduced recently, your own posts would not be excluded from TravelFeed curation by other curation team members, only you can not curate your own posts. As a curator, you would also receive a share of the team distribution when we launch our token.

I'm down! I'll drop you a message on discord tonight after work! Cheers!

Send me a message when you're ready :)
