Rocket League Review

in #gaming9 years ago (edited)

Some of you are probably wondering why I am reviewing a game that came out a while ago. Rocket League throughout its life span has released a lot of new features which have made the game way better than it was when it was first came out. There are new game modes, new maps, a new trading system, new items and so much more. So lets kick this review off.

What is Rocket League?

Rocket League is an online multiplayer car soccer game where the obvious goal is to score goals in the enemies goal (I like the word goal). You play as rocket powered RC like cars that can jump, flip, barrel roll, and even fly. You play in giant soccer arenas with walls you can drive on and with really cool animated environments outside the arenas. The ball you play with is a big futuristic looking sphere with cool lights on it.

The concept of Rocket League is simple but very fun for beginners and pros alike. There is more to hitting the ball than you think. You must consider how you want to hit the ball: if you want to hit it at full speed or what part of your car will you hit it with. Just hitting the ball without consideration of where it goes can be costly to your team or beneficial team who knows.

Gameplay and Controls

You drive these cars from a third person point of view and you can adjust the camera as you please to be further from or closer to the car. The controls for this game feel great with a controller but the mouse and keyboard will take time to get used to because it is a little weird. I have adjusted the controls a little bit to suit my needs when I need to use multiple fingers at once but the controls are still great.

Around the map are little boost stations and when you drive over them they fill up your boost meter. The bigger boost stations are mainly in the corner and in the middle of the field. The big boosts fill up your boost meter all of the way while smaller boosts that are more abundant in the arena only partially fill up your boost meter. You hold down your boost button in order to gain speed it is also how you fly in this game. If you jump and tilt your car up and hold boost you will fly like an eagle until you run out of boost.

The more you play the more you can do. Let me explain, if your a beginner the ball is generally on the ground for most of the match and your not doing many flips or jumps. Later on, you develop skills like ariels and passing, these new skills add new dimensions to the game like air shots and teamwork. The game kind of evolves with your skill, for another good example you can watch a professional e sports team play and then watch how beginners or intermediate teams play. The pros will be doing air dribbles and bounce the ball off the wall in order to pass to teammates. Beginners will be just pushing the ball around not yet aware of how that the game is completely different for more experienced players. In my opinion this keeps the game fresh and separates the strong from the

Multiplayer

Rocket League has many casual and competitive game modes for online matchmaking. The casual game modes include: Rumble, Hoops(Basketball), Snow Day(Hockey), and Dropshot. These modes are more fun and offer some really original ideas for a rocket car game. You can also play casual 1vs1, 2vs2, 3vs3, and 4vs4. The Competitive gamemodes include 1vs1, 2vs2, and 3vs3,

Competitive is really where rocket league shines and where I have played the most. You get placed in a random online match based on your skill level. You will be playing someone of around your skill level every time, which almost guarantees some good competition. The main reason I have played so much competitive is to rank up. Rocket League has its own ranking system which has changed quite of few times. The current ranking system is shown below

Single Player

There is a season mode where you and friends can play split screen against bots in a season. This is a pretty cool idea but I think it lacks depth. There needs to be more to keep me entertained by it than just playing against bots and some very basic stats. There could be more but is still a great mode for beginners because the AI is a pretty good challenge for newer players.

You can also do training to help improve your skills. There is training for ariels, defending, striking  and free play where you can just drive around and hit the ball as you like. You can also download maps and other practice courses from the steam workshop which has actually been really helpful.

Items and Trading

Rocket League has progressed from just giving items you that you can't do anything with to a full blown trading system. The new trading system allows you to trade items with other players, or if you have 5 of the same tier items you can trade them up for 1 item of a tier above. With the trading system came crates, which are very much like those in counter strike. You unlock crates by buying keys and then you will get a random hat, rocket trail, wheels or even cars.

The customization is really fun. You can change your paint color, pattern, and material. You can change your wheels, hats, antennas, and cars. If you design a car you like you can save it in a preset, which you can use later. There are so many items now it would be hard to list them all so I am not going to list them all. but here is a picture of some

What is Wrong With This Game?

I will say the games physics do go a little bit crazy sometimes. When two players squeeze against a ball the ball will shoot across the map in a random direction at full speed making it into your goal. Another slight problem with the physics is if a player barely touches a moving ball, the ball will stutter a little bit and will act like the hit never happened and continue on its original path. The season mode in my opinion can use more features but season is more of a secondary mode so I really don't care. One last thing is there servers generally have problems dealing with massive traffic and around start of new seasons or events you will either lag or not be able to get into a game. These are all minor flaws that are not too big of a deal.

What Makes This Game Fun?

Rocket League is some of the most fast paced and action packed fun any human can have. Games are the best when they are intense and when it comes down to whoever makes the first mistake. There is nothing more frightening than when the ball is bouncing in the posts of your goal and your scared to touch it because you might score on yourself. Life can't be more exciting than making a back flip ariel goal off a pass from a teammate. You might be on Rocket League for 3 hours after you first said one more game. To finish this review up Rocket League has everything you want in a multiplayer game it has fast paced action that requires some strategy, some skill, and maybe even some luck. It is a mult experience like no other.

Rocket League Scores a Rating of 9.8 Rocket Powered Goals Out of 10

So many posts about Rocket League recently (not that I'm complaining :) )
Yeah I love this game - it's the perfect casual sports game that if you want - you can also take it to a competetive level.

I gave you a welfare vote because there's not enough video game posts. I made a long post about the top console games to emulate for each system that took forever to make but didn't get much views heh:
