Dirty water and clear water / #club100steemCreated with Sketch.

Today I participate in WoX photo contest with a week topic: 'Water'. More details on the contest here:

Water - that is very simple, isnt it? No, not at all. I found it difficult to select a photo from my archive because... uhm, of course I have a lot of photos where you can see water: rivers, lakes, puddles at the streets - a lot of water. But I wanted to present you something special, focused exclusively to water, and only water. I did not find such a capture in my folders, and decided to take it. My first idea was as follows: dissolve starch in water, mix with a drop of iodine, get a chemical reaction and photograph these beautiful powerful stains, ornate swirls of tinted water.

For a week this thought was brewing in my head, I bought a pack of cornstarch, and did an experiment yesterday morning.

I didn’t know for sure what kind of picture I should get, but from chemistry lessons I remember that starch turns sharply into an intense black color, and my expectations were something like this:

(this photo is not mine)

And I got away with this result, which was... a bit disencouraging:

Because, uh, this was not what I was after. Besides that, I could not take more captures. Well, I took a few more shots but they became much worse and worse: no painted curls in the water, no details, and terrible muddy colour.

After 10-15 seconds my water experiment turned into this. Does not look like an appealing image, right?

It is extremely hard to take a photo of a process that takes very few seconds (2-3), you definitely will not have time for focusing, adjusting correct exposition etc etc etc. Flash lighting probably is important too (I had none). So, I made an experiment and figured out that I need more experiments, to understand how it works... I really not in the know how the folks gain such cool captures... probably some special water paints should be used? I am more than sure there exist some tricks to go with. Anyway, thats the question of the future, and the question of getting a better set-up, with flash, tripod, etc stuff. (At the moment I dont have any).

NB: feel free to head me at any existing guides, helping to provide visuals like that, in case you occasionally might be in the know. I'd be really grateful! 🙏

So, that was the point of getting outdoors and search for the water 'in natural metropolis habitat'. And of course, I found it pretty soon.

Found!!!

The rest needs no comments, I guess. I just stood there enjoying the white sultans of foam, and pressing the shutter with a proper speed to get detailed photos.

Very interesting experiment. Photos are cool. The water is amazing though.

Thanks for a compliment and a visit. Did you prefer the clean version (from the fountain) or the dirty one? curious.

Good question. I really like the shots with the fountain, but I would choose the "dirty" version, it looks unusually interesting

O-oo! extremely pleasurable to hear that. 'Dirty' one is curious but not perfect, I have to work on this to improve the results. But thats a question of the future. xD

I wish you good luck with this!
