"The wonderful ability of camouflage in animals"

Contest 4 : The Art of Animal Camouflage

Greetings friends of Animal os Steem, I return with my entry to the contest.
I bring you a post about this ability of many animals to blend in, camouflage themselves or disguise themselves to go unnoticed.
The example that is closest to me is that of a stick insect, which I had as a pet, in 2012. Notice that due to its color it is confused with the bark of the tree.
My graphic work or artistic work consisted of creating gif images that showed us this ability in some animals.
But first I would like to go into context, to explain what we are talking about when referring to Mimicry, (camouflage).

First: Mimicry is an evolutionary survival strategy

It consists of animals (and many plants too) managing to resemble another organism or the environment that surrounds them, for various purposes. Animals do not see like humans, which is why the color and other characteristics that some animals adopt make them appear invisible to the eyes of other animals. The Mantises are an excellent example, in this gif, you can see that since the image is less sharp it is easy to confuse it with the background color.

Some Types:

Imitate the appearance or behavior of another animal or plant species

Here is another shot of my pet, you can see that its general shape and its legs and antennae, which are elongated, knotted and similar to branches, could easily be camouflaged with trees and branches. This ability plus its slow movement allows harmless insects to increase their lifespan, and reproduce.

Homotypy: Similarity to inanimate objects in the environment. There are animals that seek to resemble objects in the environment, stones, snow, see the example of the arctic fox, which, due to its white color, blends in with the snow background to go unnoticed.

Camouflage

Skin camouflage, peloe: I got this image from Clker-Free-Vector-Images on Pixabay, to demonstrate the camouflage. The zebras blend with the vertical stripes of the savannah. The gif was created by me for this example.

What do they use it for?

Surviving :
Surviving by blending in, increases the probability of going unnoticed by predators.
In the same way to attract prey and feed, see this “crab spider” that adopts the color of the leaves where it captures its food.

Or on the other hand, a striking coloration to warn predators of its toxicity or danger. However, other animals use this ability in a different way, they disguise themselves with many colors, hairs, spines, spots to warn others that they are dangerous. A great example is caterpillars, which, no matter how beautiful, tend to be stinging and even poisonous. as a measure of survival.

Mimicry and camouflage is a wonderful ability of the different ways in which animals have adapted in the search to survive and maintain the species. It is a strategy of evolution that reminds us of the complex and fascinating interconnection that exists in the natural world. It connects us with life, and with God the creator.

See you soon

... however, the zebras' stripes are not used for camouflage. The assumption that the stripes enable the animals to regulate their body temperature (thermodynamic effects) is also considered outdated. What the stripes are excellent at, however, is dazzling stinging insects, all of which have compound eyes! This is precisely why there are now zebra rugs for very sensitive horses ;-))

Hello dear friend
She was unaware of these new scientific discoveries about the zebra's stripes. Her stripes are much more important to her survival than she thought.

thank you.
