Electric fence grounding.

A topic I see over and over in homestead topics is proper fence grounding. I feel a common misconception in electric fencing is that you can drive in a grounding rod in anywhere, and have a great ground. I have never had an issue with mine, because I picked proper ground rod site. I have often heard that you can not contain sheep with electricity, because wool acts as an insulator. I believe that if any livestock are escaping, one of three issues are the cause. Not enough joules, poor grounding, or the pasture/food sourse is so poor they would rather face electrocution vs starvation. The last may seam like the worst, and the most irresponsible fence problem. I say nay. If the fence is so ineffective that in my case the sheep can get out, than dogs, and wild predators will get in, and eat them. This is just horrific an outcome as light starvation in my book. The attached video of my system is three years old, but since I have yet to have an issue I think my system speaks for itself. Without grounding any fence will become ineffective. My set up works well simply because I am cheating. I utilize the drip from my central heat, and air system to keep the ground wet right next to my grounding post. My system is on the north side of my house and never sees direct sun light, keeping it damp in dry times. I often see systems with the box on the fence, and then electric extention cord running to the house, barn ext. Mounting the box at the house/barn and running an insulted wire to the fence is just as easy. I am sure that many exceptions exist, but for most people the soil by your home/barn is going to have more moisture in it than the soil on the fence line.
