Could it be that one of the reasons you are still single is because you've been holding on to certain beliefs and principles?

Growing up, I held on to some certain laws, principles, and doctrines that ended up having a negative impact on me.

Throughout my time in secondary school, I had this belief that I shouldn't have close relationships with the opposite sex, let alone go on dates with them. Please note, that when I say close relationships, I do not mean sexual relationships.

I vividly remember a day in JSS 3 when a friendly and intelligent female classmate extended her hand for a handshake. Unfortunately, I turned down her gesture and ended up apologizing for my actions.

In SSS 3, I used to spend time teaching my colleagues, both male and female, Mathematics and English language. One day, my colleague paid a visit to my house and we had a great conversation, sharing academic ideas. However, my parents were highly critical of this conversation. Despite my efforts to convince my parents otherwise, they remained unyielding.

I held on to these beliefs for many years. If you think I can have normal conversations with ladies online, you are in for a surprise because I would struggle to have a simple conversation with them in person. Is it shyness? Not really. Introvert? Not at all. What is it? I don't know.

About three weeks ago, at the time of writing this content, this girl and I, and a few other coursemates took a cab back from school. Luckily, the girl and I were headed in the same direction.

I couldn't find the right words to say after we got out of the cab. I wanted to, at least have a simple conversation with her.

I whispered to myself, Big Joe, you can do this. Just a nice talk with her and that's all. And so, I braced up.

Hey, good afternoon.

Good afternoon, sir, she replied warmly.

How did your exam go?

Fine, sir. Thank you, she answered politely.

The atmosphere was calm. It was the perfect moment for a meaningful conversation. But here I was, completely tongue-tied. I didn't know what to say that would make sense. I've always struggled with speaking to girls in person. It's like there's a rulebook in my head that limits me. Making eye contact with a girl is my worst nightmare. These self-imposed restrictions have held me back for too long.

And that was it. No communication with her ever since then till now.

Now, I ask you again, could it be that one of the reasons you are still single is because of these self-imposed laws or principles? It's time to break free from them and learn how to navigate relationships with wisdom before it's too late.

As for me, I've started working on myself. And what about you? Work on yourself, too, buddy!
