Barefoot Runner

In a marathon held recently in Egypt, the unexpected winner was a 10 year old girl who works as a street peddler selling scarves at train stations.

Poor Marwa who lost her mother and lives with her stay at home sick father, and her siblings, is the one responsible for her family's well being. At the tender age of ten, Marwa's daily routine of hard work and taking care of an entire family remained unchanged until recently.

On one of her recent street walks, Marwa noticed a charity Marathon for kids. She approached members of the committee organizing the event and asked if she can participate. Marwa did not have a sports suit nor did she own a running shoes, and there was no way for her to pay the fee involved.

After a brief discussion the committee allowed her to run the Marathon barefoot in her everyday cloth she wears to work. They assumed she will get tired and quit before the end of the Marathon anyway.

Yet Marwa was determined, this 10 year old barefoot runner, finished the Marathon the winner, she was quickly thrown into the limelight as she became a social media star. Offers for sponsorship and donations were coming her way, but she said she was not interested in charity, she wanted education and to be a doctor to help the sick and the poor.

This heartwarming story of a poor child getting a breakthrough brings me to a project dear to me, Sportspodium, soon to be a reality this project will utilize blockchain technology to make data about promising young athletes available and gives them a chance at being discovered. This is not the sole mission of the project but one that demands a lot of respect.
