42000 TWU Local 100 Union Workers With Families And friends Are Coming To Steemit

in #steemit8 years ago

I have always stressed the word of mouth advertising as the best and least expensive way of attracting people, simply because people tell people. So I decided to try and make the biggest impact I can with word of mouth steemit.com advertising.

Years ago, before moving to Ohio, I used to live in New York state, I moved between a few cities, from Spring Valley upstate, to Yonkers, to The Bronx. I lived a few years in each city, however, when I moved to The Bronx I had to give up owning a car, simply because driving in New York city and the five boroughs is a luxury not many can afford, you get a ticket everywhere you park your car. You have to wake up every other day in the wee hours of the morning to move your car to the other side of the street so they can sweep one side. Need I mention waking up at that time was no easy task for me, my work started at 3 PM and by the time I got back home it was always way after midnight, heck if I hit a traffic jam and that happened frequently, I'd get home by 3 or 4 am. So I was guaranteed a parking ticket every other day. Eventually I had to part with my car and decided to use the buses and subways.

Taking the afternoon bus everyday I ended up meeting a few bus drivers, and some were very friendly and talkative. Eventually I became friends with some of them, we started meeting on social occasions, go bowling, and sometimes they invited me to their union eat out, or birthday parties etc.

At one of these events I met Gus, a union rep at the time, he was having a heated discussion with one of friends, and I kind of joined in on the conversation. After the discussion settled, Gus asked me what transportation company I worked for. Knowing this was a union event, I quickly turned red, I did not want him to think I was a party crasher, so I answered " Oh I am not a driver I am a passenger " ; everyone laughed. This embarrassing moment started a friendship between me and Gus. We met after that on a few occasions, and then he invited me to a family event and I did the same afterwards and the rest is history. Me and Gus became much more than friends.

After moving to Ohio I kept close contact with Gus, who is now on the Executive Board of School Bus /Para-Transit at the Local 100. Here is a little info about TWU Local 100 taken directly from their website:

New York's Public Transit Union

What is Local 100?
Local 100 is a local (or chapter) of the Transport Workers Union of America, a union that represents transportation workers in bus and subway lines, and several airlines nationwide.

Specifically, which workers are represented and where?
In the City's subway lines, Local 100 represents virtually all employees including those who operate trains, maintain the trains and tracks, staff the token booths, clean platforms and subway cars, and service and repair mechanical equipment such as elevators and escalators.

Local 100 represents most of the men and women who drive and maintain public buses buses in New York City under the umbrellas of MaBSTOA in Manhattan and the Bronx, NYC Transit Surface Division in Brooklyn, and MTA Bus in Queens and the Bronx.

Local 100 represent workers at other private transportation firms. Among these are members at Liberaty Lines, providing commuter transportation in Westchester, Waterways, servicing New York Waterway's ferry passengers, First Transit, where our members schedule paratransit service, and several school bus companies.

How many members does the union now have?
We have about 42,000 members who are actively working at jobs we cover and about 26,000 retirees.

I already knew from having conversations with Gus and a couple of my other friends at the Local 100 that they frequently use social media, mainly Facebook, as means of communications, debates, election issues etc.

I decided to give Gus a call, that was two days ago, I explained to him everything I know about Steemit.
Then when I thought he had enough knowledge of how Steemit works, I asked the important question, is it possible for the Union workers to move to Steemit vs using Facebook. The answer was exactly like I expected, Gus will move a group discussion page called "OneVoice" they host on Facebook to Steemit.com

That's the seed that is planted in one of the biggest unions in the country, and like I said people tell people. The reach of this union in New York alone is beyond imagination. Hundreds of talkative Bus drivers that deal with thousands of people on daily basis if the conversion rate we get is only 2%.
