The European Southern Observatory cannot tolerate the satellites.

The European Southern Observatory has released a statement regarding satellites; they tend to be measured and politically correct in their communications, but one could sense underlying anger. I’ve spent so many years reading these statements that I can pick up on the subtext—that something significant is going on—and they were clearly frustrated with the satellite situation.

They’ve released several videos; one of them uses time-lapse footage to show just how many satellites are visible to the naked eye—this isn't a view through a telescope. They simply set up a camera at the observatory in northern Chile to capture what appears in the sky, and if you were to look through the observatory's actual equipment, you would see even more satellites.

On July 1st, a statement was issued warning of the serious threat posed to night-sky observation by the growing number of satellite constellations and even more massive projects—such as placing mirrors in orbit or initiatives like the one announced by Elon Musk: the creation of a network of one million data servers in low Earth orbit. ESO astronomers explain that satellites illuminated by the sun are far brighter than distant galaxies; consequently, when a satellite crosses an astronomer's field of view, it leaves a bright streak across the image being observed.

This streak illuminates and obscures everything behind it with its glare, rendering whatever lies in its wake unobservable. It becomes impossible to know what is hidden behind the streak—whether it is a distant galaxy, an asteroid, a comet, or even an asteroid on a collision course with Earth that goes undetected because the satellite’s glare has masked it.

There are currently around 14,000 active artificial satellites; to this figure, one must add space debris—consisting of millions of fragments. Furthermore, imagine when that number of 14,000 multiplies—considering Elon Musk’s planned million satellites, plus hundreds of thousands more from other constellations, given that he is not the only one building and planning such space-based networks.
