What was done was to pass a very weak laser beam through a cloud of rubidium atoms, in a state of super cooling, that is, slightly above absolute zero, the minimum possible temperature and the following occurred:

When this laser went through the cloud, the photons joined in pairs or triplets as if some kind of attraction had caught them, why did this happen? because it is believed that it is because the photons interact with the rubidium atoms that are practically still due to the low temperatures, a hybrid is formed between these atoms and the photons that has been called polariton.

In other words, photons that although not individually, as a whole do behave as if they were an atom when leaving the cloud of rubidium, which is called a quasi-particle.
