Sports fields and playgrounds with artificial grass are known to be more durable and require less maintenance than those with natural grass, however, they tend to get too hot on hot days, now Scientists have found a natural solution to cool these fields and the cities where they are located.

Using rainwater stored under the grass, natural grass generally remains cooler than artificial grass thanks to the continuous evaporation of water stored in the soil and in the grass itself, which generates a cooling effect, in contrast to grass. artificial prevents rainwater from penetrating the soil, causing runoff and leaving the soil dry.

Although it is possible to spray artificial grass with water the cooling effect is temporary and can make the surface slippery, to solve this problem a team of Dutch scientists from the KWR water research institute have developed an innovative approach.

They created four external test plots, each 5 by 5 m, one of these plots included a special layer of open-bottomed artificial grass, over a layer of sand, a porous shock-absorbing foam and a rainwater tank.

The reservoir made of a polymer structural material called Permavoid 85s is commonly used to dine water on green roofs, this reservoir allows rainwater to pass through the layers of grass and accumulate.

Rock wool-filled vertical cylinders inside the Permavoid pull water back toward the top of the reservoir, as the grass and materials above it heat the water continually evaporates producing a cooling effect similar to natural grass, plus By cooling the fields, this technology can reduce the heat island effect in cities and as an additional benefit, the fields that use this system will store rainwater, relieving the storm sewage system.
