Joe Biden Promises to "Cure Cancer" If Elected President

  Presidential candidates are notorious for the extravagant campaign promises that they never deliver on, but Joe Biden may have topped them all during an appearance this week.At a campaign event in Ottumwa, Iowa, the former vice president promised an audience that he would “cure cancer” if he is elected president.The statement seemed to come out of nowhere. As Biden stumbled through a segment about how he knows what it is like to experience loss, he seems to get distracted before announcing that he is going to cure cancer.

“A lot of you understand what loss is and when loss occurs, you know that people come up to you and tell you ‘I understand’ if you lose a husband, a wife, a son, a daughter, a family member,” Biden said.“That’s why I’ve worked so hard in my career to make sure that — I promise you if I’m elected president, you’re going to see the single most important thing that changes America, we’re gonna cure cancer,” he added.

 Biden’s comments were met with applause by most of the audience, but he was heckled by a protester shortly after the cancer announcement.The audience responded by booing the man, and he was quickly removed from the building.

“No, no, that’s OK. No, no, no. This is not a Trump rally. Let him go,” Biden said, as the man was removed from the event.To be fair, Biden has been involved in numerous cancer charities since losing his son to brain cancer in 2015. The very next year, in 2016, Biden led the “Cancer Moonshot” initiative while in the Obama administration. 

After leaving office, he set up the Biden Cancer Initiative, a fundraising and networking organization for cancer research. These are noteworthy efforts, but they still haven’t brought us any closer to curing cancer.According to Reuters, roughly $5 billion dollars is donated to cancer research every year. Some optimistic studies have noted that there has been a decrease in cancer deaths among people over the age of 45 in the past decade. However, a variety of different cancers are increasing among young people, and the World Health Organization estimates that the number of people in need of cancer treatment will rise from roughly 10 million annually to 15 million by the year 2040.

Despite the numerous controversies that have surrounded Biden since he announced his run for office, he still continues to maintain a lead in many of the major polls. CNBC reported this week that Biden is polling especially well among millionaires, many of whom say that they prefer him over Trump. However, it’s important to note that Hillary Clinton was also at the top of the same poll when she was running for president.

According to the 2016 pre-election Millionaire Survey from CNBC, Clinton was favored over Trump by millionaires with a margin of 44% to 31%, but still ended up losing the election. Just like Clinton, Biden is largely alienated from many left-leaning Americans due to his record on the drug war and his continued inappropriate attitude towards women.
