Her Thirties Part 90

Marilyn was in the hospital recovering from the trauma of recalling the fire and her mother’s murder.

I felt totally lost and phoned Abe and within minutes he was at the emergency room reassuring me with his presence

“C’mon, let’s get a coffee,” he smiled. His genial manner lifted my spirits.

I gave the charge nurse my cell number and followed Abe to the cafeteria. We bought coffees and took them outside to sit on a bench with a view of the lake.

It was another mild spring day—a bit windy, but the temperature in the fifties and the sun sparkling out on the waves.

“Reminds me of the day we played football in High Park,” Abe grinned.

I was glad we already had a history to share. I liked Abe and wished I never doubted him. I think he sensed it too.

“You know, you can trust me, Scott—I wouldn’t have stopped Marilyn—just would have been there for backup.”

“I know, Abe. I realize that now.”

“So, what did she remember?”

“It all came back. Her uncle killed her mother and started a fire to cover it up.”

“What’s the guy’s name?”

“Charlie Forrester.”

Abe’s eyes grew huge.

“Do you know this guy?” I asked.

“Oh yeah. A small-time hood—worked in construction for a company that was once owned by his dad—a real mafia leader from the UK. I think his dad died back in the mid 90’s.”

“You’re kidding—a real British gangster?”

“Yup. Jack Forrester. Back in the Thirties his construction firm was trying to get contracts to help build the Palace Pier complex—but the Depression hit, and then the War—and the Pier never did get completed.”

“You never saw this Charlie guy as a possible suspect?”

“No. Why would we?”

“I thought you guys automatically fingered the next of kin.”

“Maybe it works that way in the movies, Pal—hopefully, Marilyn can shed some more light on their relationship.”

“So, Marilyn’s stalker is her uncle,” I mused.

“He may have suspected Marilyn witnessed something and wanted to make sure she was out of the way.”

“If he’s the same visitor the neighbor saw at the house, he fits the description of the figure I saw in the laneway—an older man—and probably pretty powerful if he’s worked all his life in construction.”

“We’ll find out his address and pick him up. He may sing once he thinks the game’s over.”

“I hope so. That’ll at least eliminate the threat to Marilyn’s life.”

Abe glanced at his watch. “I’m gonna get on this right now, and try to get this crazy off the street. Let me know if Marilyn recalls anything else.”

I stood up with him. “I will Abe.”

I went to shake his hand, but instead, he crushed me in a bear hug.

“You watch yourself, Pal—I’ve got a guard on Marilyn’s room and Cindy’s back on your tail.” He pointed to the doorway where Cindy had been hanging back in the shadows.

She gave a small half-wave that reminded me of Samantha. Again, a lump formed in my throat. Abe just cuffed me with a bear paw and was gone.

I don't know, John. I still got my eye on Abe. Will we get more of Cindy in the next instalment?

She's never far from Scott - I thought you suspected the psychiatrist, Dr. Lambert - Abe is golden, I think - But then, these characters - I never know where they'll end up. My cat knows - he's my Muse, but he's being grumpy today because it's raining and driving Deb nuts - so vocal, these tabbies :)

Well ... I agree with whatever the cat says ... and Deb. LOL. But I have always thought there was more than one person involved. Perhaps, the doctor is the ring leader.

I still don't feel good about Abe...something seems off. Interesting he knew all about Charlie but I guess if he is a gangster the organized crime connection would have him in their spotlights. So even though Abe was following Marilyn and Scott the night they were pushed in the water Abe didn't see the guy at all? Hmmm...

poor Abe - he can't catch a break - I've got to see what my characters have up their sleeve - I don't think Abe is dirty - Dr. Lambert, the psychiatrist? Maybe...

Beautiful
