Ghosts of Mid-March
What I don’t—
Spring is coming
While I’m unsure if my love
Will or won’t
I’ve spent an afternoon
In the damp March gloom
Watching the path
Wondering if this is
What I want at last
Torn as I always am
Between present and past
The leaden sky above
Turning in the wind
Finding no way back
And if I find you again
And by some miracle
Retrace my footsteps
In the rain
Would the outcome be mystical?
To see your phantasm rise
Before my eyes
Wrenches my heart with grief—
I have no right
To interrupt your peace
Go on dreaming
In your blissful state
Don’t waken at my voice
The hour is late…
Go back to sleep and wait.
When I was in university, I had an ex-boyfried die. We had broken up but our feelings for each other were never resolved. More than a few times I have dreamed him alive but as your poem points out, he may be far happier laying in peace. Until the next life, as they say. Beautiful and poignant write. Elegant.
Thanks, Pryde - Yes, oftentimes that thought occurs to me :)
