The Inevitable End
All good things come to an end, that’s what they say….. and after ten years on the assembly line the bike I have lived many an adventure on has reached the end of it’s production cycle.
The BMW F800GS is no more ....everyone please, a round of applause for this rather capable machine.
But what has BMW engineered to replace it ? What marvel of innovation could I hope to see fill the void left by F800GS?
Well, it’s called the F850 GS (unsurprisingly perhaps). Its just been launched on the market and is currently available for viewing at EICMA (Esposizione Internazionale Cicli e Motorcycle ed Accessori), the biggest motorcycle fair in Europe that takes place every year in Milan, Italy. I decided to go and check it out.
I bought my ticket to the exhibition online and collected my pass at the main gates of the Expo centre in Rho, not too far from Milan’s town centre. All went smoothly as I followed the masses of motorbike enthusiasts into the pavilions of the huge international fair complex.
Kymco, also known as the Kwan Yang Motor Company has established itself as a major brand in the scooter business. All eyes were on this particular model.
Lambretta had a huge presence at the fair. This model attracted a lot of attention.
I wasted no time and turned my camera lens towards some of the eye catching new models on show. Scooters, tourers off road machines, there was something for everyone.
Yellow off road machines had a huge number of admirers
I must admit that I was surprised to discover that brands from a distant past were still alive and in business. Lambretta, Norton and Indian for example. Royal Enfield was also present and rose more than just a little curiosity.
The new F850GS was hard to get close to with a permanent crowd around the few bikes on show
“Hello, just a couple of quick questions. The 850cc engine, where was it developed?” I asked.
“In China, the engine is assembled in China and then sent to the production line in Germany” came the reply.
Chinese technology I thought. A clear shift from the Rotax motors from Austria that BMW has focussed on in the past. No reason to doubt durability and reliability I told myself.
“What about weight and fuel capacity?”
“The bike weighs around 232Kg on the road….”
My old F800GS pictured while riding through Iran
Mhmm.....that’s a good 15kg heavier than the old F800, I told myself.
“The fuel tank capacity is 15 litres”
Oh dear I thought.....one litre less than the F800.
“Has consumption improved?”
“Er not sure about that.....think it’s pretty much the same and the F800” came the reply.
I felt mildly disappointed. Over the course of my overland motorcycle trip across Asia there were some features I grew to appreciate about any bike. Lightness, range, reliability and an appetite for rugged terrain being among the major ones. Ergonomics and suspension are two more.
Interesting model from Kawasaki
“But look” said the salesman,
“There’s a new digital screen with enhanced connectivity. You can plug your phone in and scroll through your music menus as you ride.....” he beamed with enthusiasm.
I was saddened. Riding a motorbike is hardly about connectivity, actually quite the opposite! It’s about escape, from home, the office, the responsibilities and the burdens of that damn connectivity that suffocates each and every one of us more each day. Besides, listening to music through head phones while riding a bike is illegal in many countries.
“....and this lever is used to flick through the menu of the optional GPS...” I heard the rep continue.
The marketing machine was doing it’s thing distracting the customer with bells and whistles.
What I think
The new F850GS will sell for sure. The new engine has power and speed. Plus that new digital display has plenty of connectivity…..no doubt some will find it deal breaker.
Me? I’m not so sure what to make of it. I don't feel very enthusiastic about the new F850.
Perhaps I need a very long test ride before any final opinion.
@john-gpr,
My partner would be jealous, and yes I will show him your article later, although he is following KTM. The bike that he wants is the 790 Adventurer which will be available in Australia around March 2019.
I also agree with you with the bike as an escape. Give me the basics of on-off.
We have just had a holiday. One of the things that I needed to attend to was getting my BMW 650 serviced and registered. Over the course of the two weeks, I spent around 5 hours on her. I need to get more experience with curves, as Darwin has all straight roads. The BMW will stay in Queensland for the moment, as that is were we will be moving to.
The next trip may involve some adventure skill development for me.
8 ) infinity happiness
The 790 is still just a prototype and was also on show in Milan. I hope you enjoy your adventure. I'm told Australia has so much to offer to the keen bike rider. One day I will make it there to see for myself .....for sure!
Don't forget to post about your adventures on the 650. I wanna know !
@john-gpr,
It will be around six plus months before I ride her again.
