Ocumare de la Costa, in the heart of the Gold Coast 💛💙❤️ 🇻🇪
To the north of Aragua State, surrounded by the green mountains that make up the Henri Pittier National Park, is the town of Ocumare de la Costa. A must for tourists heading to the beaches of Cata or Cuyagua, but one that is worth visiting by itself.
The town was formed in the middle of the seventeenth century, from some indigenous commanderies dedicated to agriculture. Its consolidation as a town occurs in the year 1731. The main livelihood of the population was the production of coffee and cocoa and fishing. In the last decades, the tourism boom has taken an important part of the economy of Ocumare de la Costa.
This is the starting point to go to places like Cumboto, Cata and Cuyagua. From here you take the boats that go to La Ciénaga. But the tourist infrastructure of the town and the beaches of Playón, Maya and Mayita, make it not necessary to leave Ocumare to spend an excellent weekend of sea and sun.
The town of Ocumare de la Costa is actually divided into two parts: Ocumare itself, where most of the inhabitants reside, and El Playón. In Ocumare, the presence of the Church of San Sebastián, the patron saint of the town, stands out.
El Playón is the beach of Ocumare de la Costa, it is a town dedicated to tourism, where most of the inns, vacation homes, restaurants and beach goods stores are located.
A little away from Playón is La Boca. Here the fishermen gather to distribute their products. It is the right place to buy very fresh fish. In addition, here you can find the peñeros that transport tourists to nearby beaches, such as La Ciénaga, Cata or Catica and to others further away such as Cepe and Chuao.
The town of Ocumare is very famous for its cocoa cultivation, the locals cultivate this fruit and then process it and obtain the delicious chocolate. In the street stalls and shops of the town you can buy excellent artisan products based on cocoa.
One cannot speak of Ocumare without mentioning La Trilla, so called because the coffee produced in the area was threshed there. Now it is an ideal place to take a bath in the river after spending the day at the beach.
Gastronomy
The gastronomic adventure begins long before reaching Ocumare. In the La Trilla sector, on the side of the road, the empanada stands are ready to provide you with a great breakfast. Excellent empanadas are also made in the town.
In Ocumare de la Costa a pastry tradition has been maintained that allows visitors to buy delicious sweets, such as kisses and coconut preserves and the exquisite majarete, as well as creations based on the area's cocoa, as well as chocolates. These delicacies are offered in street stalls.
