Professional traveler Rick Steve’s is a self described Cannabis Warrior, and believes that cannabis use is protected activity under the constitution. He is using his platform as an opportunity to make a case for widespread Cannabis acceptance and to fight the stigma of almost a hundred years of purposeful and unwarranted demonization.

Travel legend Rick Steves: Prohibition is racist, smoking marijuana is a civil liberty
'I like to share the truth and I don’t like to see our country embracing lies and being afraid.'

The mild-mannered TV personality has lent his mainstream credibility to legalization efforts for 20 years as a self-professed soldier for NORML and the Marijuana Policy Project.

Leafly: You’ve said, “I believe ‘high’ is a place that we should be allowed to visit.” Can you recap your pot policy beliefs for folks new to this side of you?

Rick Steves: I just feel very strongly that smoking marijuana responsibly as an adult is a civil liberty.
Twenty years ago, when I started talking about this, it was dangerous to speak publicly in favor of legalizing pot.

“There are so many reasons to end the prohibition on marijuana,” Steves says in a release. “Whether you’re concerned about the well-being of children, fairness for our minority communities, redirecting money away from criminals and into our state’s coffers, stemming the horrific bloodshed in Mexico, or civil liberties, it is clearly time for a new approach.”

The Boston Globe’s Dan Adams from the Week in Weed column echoing a similar point of view.

"One of the most common reasons police use to stop [Black people] has been, historically, the odor of marjuana, or planting marijuana– right? It’s one of the most common pretenses for police to get involved with people, to search your pockets, to search your car, to check for warrants,” Dan Adams of the Boston Globe week in weed column, said.

"Watching [the George Floyd protests] unfold as a cannabis reporter has been really striking, because I deal all the time with the history of the drug war, and there’s a direct connection between what’s going on with everyone on the streets… and an idea that we’ve talked about on this show a lot, which is this whole idea of equity in cannabis licensing,” Adams said.

The whole hemp plant may be used as food. The [WSDA] shall regulate the processing of hemp for food products, that are allowable under federal law, in the same manner as other food processing under chapters 15.130 [(Washington’s Food Safety and Security Act)] and 69.07 RCW [(Washington Food Processing Act)] and may adopt rules as necessary to properly regulate the processing of hemp for food products including, but not limited to, establishing standards for creating hemp extracts used for food.

Florida has big problems in it;s waterways, reports are that because of overuse, the blooms of harmful algae are causing a dangerous situation around the panhandle. they are now looking at hemp based technology as a means to erradicate the over growth of bacteria and algae.

U.S. researchers will study hemp’s potential to clear algae

IMG_E2918.JPG

Researchers in the U.S. state of Florida are studying how hemp plants could help in the battle against toxic algae, a persistent problem at the state’s two coasts.

Scientists have found that decades of farming, development and canal dredging has overloaded Lake Okeechobee, the state’s biggest fresh-water body, and other Florida waters with the nutrients that feed toxic blue-green algae and red tide algae in coastal waters.

“I know that hemp growers spend a lot of money creating a water supply that’s rich in nitrogen and phosphorus because cannabis needs that,” Edmonds told UPI. “It just makes sense to try this.”

which hemp plants are placed on a bed of soil and clay, held up by the mats. The plants’ roots hang down into the water, sucking up naturally occuring nitrogen and phosphorus.

Health problems due to harmful algae cost the nation $22 million annually, a report from the University of Florida has said. Toxic algae, which wash onto beaches, cause foul odors and kill marine life.
