For Steemians who desire to make a living from Steemit Cambodia offers an amazing opportunity! Phnom Penh doesn't spring to mind as one of the world's premier vacation destinations yet Cambodia's capital city has several attributes which make it an ideal location to settle down for a bit and work on Steemit.
The low cost of living in Cambodia means that living off Steem is achievable and hard work would generate savings! 😃
How Can I Live In Cambodia From Steemit?
There are many reasons to move to Cambodia such as adventure, experiencing a new culture and the tropical climate but a powerful incentive is the low cost of living. With a little effort it is totally possible to live in Cambodia solely off Steemit. Before we get into the costs it is only fair that I point out that I am travelling solo and currently only in the capital city of Phnom Penh. I am sure my good friend @samstonehill will have interesting input into the costs of living off Steemit in Asia with a young family!
Basic Cost Of Living:
USD $100 p/w - is what I pay for my apartment in Phnom Penh. My abode is in a good area, includes two bedrooms, three bathrooms, air conditioning, Internet, electricity and a balcony. It is possible to get much cheaper apartments in Phnom Penh and more money will let you live like a king!
USD $100 p/w - will let you eat and live very well for 7 days. This includes eating at a restaurant once or twice a day and as much fruit and salad as you want! If you cook for yourself it is possible to eat much cheaper!
The end result is that for USD $200 per week it is possible to live very well in Phnom Penh and surely this would be even cheaper out of the city!
Getting Your Crypto-currency In Cambodia

Although I don't particularly like using traditional banking systems it seems it is relatively easy to get a bank account here in Cambodia. I have already confirmed with several purchasers of Bitcoin here that they will deposit money into my Cambodian bank account if I send them Bitcoin. This means that while living off Steemit in Cambodia you can travel around and just use local ATMs.
Cambodia Has A Lot To Offer!
Apart from the low cost of living Cambodia has some very interesting things going for it. Cambodia's shocking recent history has left a mark on the people and culture which I am just beginning to learn about. However there are some aspects of life in Cambodia which makes it attractive for Steemians.
Beautiful People & Countryside - The people are lovely and the country is beautiful boasting islands, tropical beaches, ancient temples, jungle and fascinating culture.
Visas - Until recently foreigners were able to purchase 1 year or 6 months visas to stay in Cambodia. It appears that the laws have recently changed but I have struggled to get accurate information. It is still possible for visitors to get visas to stay for 4 months at a time. This is significantly better than Thailand or Indonesia currently.
Culture - Cambodia has had a shocking recent history and its population is relatively young. The people seem softly spoken and polite. I warmed to them immediately. The Cambodians have not yet been corrupted by mass tourism and display beautiful Asian cultural traits. A traditional tolerance of Cannabis has given Cambodia coffees shops similar to Amsterdam. This relaxed attitude combined with cheap imported alcohol and a Buddhist philosophy make Cambodia a laid back place. It would not be appropriate to mention Khmer culture without mentioning the famous temple of Angkor Wat which is pictured in this post.
Food - Sadly the food in Cambodia does not seem to be as good as its neighbours. I am not sure if the recent past contributed to the cuisine but that does not matter in Phnom Penh as there is an abundance of restaurants serving food from around the world at very good prices. Because of the world trade organisation (I have yet to confirm this) Cambodia has enormous amounts of imported European and Australian food stuffs at very cheap prices making Phnom Penh a cook's dream.
Language - They speak several languages here in Cambodia but it seems in Phnom Penh they speak mostly Khmer. A lot of people speak a little english and learning new languages is humbling and fun.
Money - Cambodia has an strange dual currency system. US Dollars are used for large denominations and the local currency the Riel is used for small amounts.
Give Something Back - By spending time in Cambodia you are putting money into an economy that needs it!
Considerations
Cambodia has a lot of positives for Steemians but there are a few things to consider if you want to make Phnom Penh your Steemit base:
Health Care - The quality of health care here is questionable and everyone I have spoken to has told me to go to Bangkok or Singapore if I have serious health issues.
Drugs - It is worth mentioning that Cambodia seems to have a large illicit drug scene. Although I do not use substances myself I don't advise people with existing issues to move to Cambodia. There seems to abundant and cheap hard drugs. If you play with these substances you can end up dead or in prison in Cambodia!
Cambodia Is Developing - It's clear there is a lot of development going on in Cambodia now - Phnom Penh has cranes all over the place. However many things are not as well developed as the west. For me this is part of the adventure and experience but it may not be for everyone.
Cambodia & The Region
Steemians who wish to live off Steem and have a South East Asian adventure could do worse than look towards Cambodia. A nation with a beautiful land and amazing people dotted with ancient temples awaits the intrepid Steemian. If Cambodia is not quite spicy enough for you Thailand, Vietnam, Laos, Indonesia, Malaysia and Singapore are all on Cambodia's doorstep.
Whether Cambodia is correct for you or not Steemit is providing opportunities for travel and cultural understanding which surely brings us closer together. Look good buddy. Places like this are great for self-reliance my only concern would be the weather. On vacation it's different, but for living, For me personally I find it impossible to live and work in an environment that is super hot and humid, I just want to sleep or beach all day. No fun when you really want to work on stuff.

Nice post @jockey and thanks for the information. This year there should be voting in Cambodia and I hear from many people that it would not be safe to be there. I’m Cambodian but it could also been fake news.
