To Die Alone

‘Where the road forks,
we’ll go our separate ways.’
‘But I love you,’ I protested.
‘Even in love we are on our own,
whether we want it or not,’ she said
with a voice bearing an overwhelming sadness.
What are we but wounds desperate to heal
in each other’s arms? We spend our lives
trying to stitch ourselves together,
but what’s the point? What is love
other than the frail scars that we become?
‘You were always a dream,’ I told her.
‘You were the only dream worth waking up to.’
‘But to appreciate the sweetest dream,
you have to accept
the most horrid nightmare,’ she said.
‘The nightmare which is?’
‘This sad reality we must face.’
