Back to the Basics in Knitting
I mentioned in a previous post that I taught myself to knit many, many years ago. The problem is that since I never received formal one on one instruction, I missed a lot of the basic skills. Oh sure, I can make some stuff, but it does not look professional. For example when I accidently drop a stitch, I have trouble picking it back up so that it looks seemless. On the other hand, I can crochet anything, with or without a pattern. I can also look at most crocheted items and tell how they were put together. So I decided to start watching knitting tutorials to get some basic skills which will hopefully help me in my quest to make better looking garments.
I started with this video which shows how to make a diagonal shaped dish cloth with holes along the edges. It seems fairly simple and I decided to use some cotton yarn that I had on hand.
I worked on the dish cloth while I went back and forth to a long standing project that I have been working on and struggling with because I can't remember the pattern. I decided to change up the pattern and make something else. If I had better skills in knitting, I am sure that I would be able to re-construct this pattern. I am getting close, but I am not there yet. In the meantime, I am omitting the holes in the pattern.
I learn something new every Monday just from reading the various posts within this community. Keep posting ladies. It helps to see your creations and the endless possibilities with knitting, crocheting and sewing.
Until next time . . .
I love the red yarn with the little flecks of darker colour!!! What will this become? And I am not sure what problems you are encountering as it looks very neat. If you forgot the pattern, perhaps I can help, as the hole part looks a bit like this (never finished) project of me

and this is the hole pattern
But in yours there is also a row of garter stitch.
If these were not your questions, then I am sorry and blame my bad English :-D
But rest assured, while reading your post I always think you are very accomplished in crafts I would never have guessed that you taught yourself.
Thank you so much!!! I should have known that one of the experienced knitters would be able to look at my piece and figure it out. You have saved me so much time. I am knitting a sweater from the bottom up. I had already decided that I would not repeat the hole pattern, but now I can thanks to you. :)
I am the reverse of you - I learned to knit when I was eleven, because we had a knitting club after school. But crochet is so much harder for me. I've crocheted a little, but I need to re-teach myself every time and it takes a while before I get the tension right. And I can't get distracted - because then I get a wavy loose-tight-loose-tight thing going on instead of a straight line, lol. But knitting, unless it's a complicated pattern where I need to be counting and swapping yarns or something, I can do without looking. XD
Your description of crocheting is exactly what I go through with knitting. I’m getting better because I’ve been trying to knit more because of this group, rather than go to my safety zone in crocheting.
It never hurts to go back to basics, I find I often have to do that when I haven’t practiced a craft for a while.
May I say what a gorgeous colour that yarn is, just stunning (I love colours 😜).
Thanks for sharing.
Thank you. This yarn has a very silky texture as well.
I know what you mean - my dad taught me to knit and that was fine for garter stitch! The rest I have learned as I go. I agree with you, my knitting has come on in leaps and bounds since I joined a knitting group, and I have learned to crochet from #needleworkmonday.
