Trying out WikiLeaks #QuestOfRandomClues 2
This is a continuation on a series of random quests posted by the official account of Wikileaks on Twitter and one I am trying to decode from scratch.
This one was released a day after the first one and this time it's a .onion site.
One way to access a .onion site is to simply just use a browser that can reach the TOR network. In this case, I used the TOR Browser and found out that the clue leads us to an image that looks like an airport. Guess that hashtag is there for a reason #MythicPlanes
So I downloaded the file and noticed that it was saved as "2u55fq73azn2lhzm.onion" which honestly struck me as unusual because in this case that would be 2u55fq73azn2lhzm.onion.XXX (where XXX could be JPG, PNG,GIF). So I checked what the file is really about and it's just jpg. (One could have an extension of ".jpg" but is really ".png" or other extension)
Checking it's Metadata:
Now once again we have GPS Coordinates like the first clue released. It is not that unusual for an image to have a GPS coordinate though as there are now devices that enables geotagging by default. But for now let us put a pin on that GPS data: 53° 24' 0.52" North, 6° 13' 4.89" East
Checking for hidden files inside the image file:
And none! It seems the only clue we have for now is the GPS Coordinates. Looking at it on Google Map we get this:
Not what I expected considering the image was close to an airport, instead the coordinate seems to be near a port. Using Google's Image Reverse Search on the first image we now know that it was in fact the Dublin Airport in Ireland while the coordinates (which I think was edited out to point us to this location) was in the Netherlands. A 900km+ difference. Also it is worth to note that it is said that Netherlands has the fastest internet on Europe. Could be related to that! :)
I also tried to run "Outguess" on the image file and it seems there is more.
The file is heavily encrypted though and "might" need a key to which I have no idea where could be
Looks like an interesting game! Haha..
