TIL about YIPS! What is Yips?

in #health8 years ago

So I was watching the latest episode of The Simpsons S29E17 titled "Lisa Gets the Blues" in which Lisa suddenly lost her ability to play the saxophone. What got me interested in the episode was what Lisa searched in her computer, the name of the condition she suddenly is in. To quote her:

What is the name when you can't perform something that you've practiced four times a week since you were three?!

Apparently, there is a name for that and it is called The Yips, named after Dr. Augustus Yip. (or so the show said)

A mysterious psychological condition where well-rehearsed skills suddenly become impossible.

Out of pure curiosity, I then began checking if Yips is a true condition or something made up by the show. To which I only got a wiki-article regarding it.

The yips is the loss of fine motor skills in athletes. The condition occurs suddenly and without apparent explanation, usually in mature athletes with years of experience. The yips may manifest themselves as twitches, staggers, jitters, and jerks.

The American Heritage Dictionary also has something to say about this condition:

Yips - Nervousness or tension that causes an athlete to fail to perform effectively, especially in missing short putts in golf.

Conclusion:

Yips seems to be a real deal and is widely considered as a psychological condition which commonly affects skilled sportsmen where they suddenly lose muscle control over a part or parts of their body.

The term yips is said to have been popularized by Tommy Armour, a golf champion, who later become a golf teacher to explain easily why he abandoned the tournament play.
