12 Curious Animals.
Dear Steemians, to continue writing about curiosities in this opportunity, I have brought a count of 12 animals that are strangely incredible, that in fact I can assure that they do not know some of them and I know it will be interesting to know a little of each one, I only wish that this information be useful for each of you ... Let's start!
1) Singing dog of New Guinea.
This relative of the Australian Dingo evolved isolated from the other canids for more than 5000 years, its distinctive feature is that he can modulate the tone of his howls so that he seems to be singing and sometimes he does it in chorus. It is also one of the few dogs with a spine so flexible that it can climb trees.
It is a pity that this species has a real possibility of becoming extinct in the next generations.
2) Platypus.
No list of curious animals would be complete without him. When the English naturalists saw one stuffed for the first time, they thought it was a fraud: What animal could have hair, beaver tail, webbed feet and bird beak?
It turns out that the platypus is of the order of the monotremes, peculiar mammals that lay eggs, exclusive to Australia and New Guinea. In addition they are of the very few poisonous mammals. Beware of the spur of its legs.
The females suckle their young for three or four months until the babies can swim alone.
3) Black Panther.
What's so strange about the black panther?
Well, surely you did not know that this species does not exist.
What exist are leopards and jaguars with melanism, a condition contrary to albinism and that makes them completely black.
... a "black panther" is not its own species; is a general term that refers to any big cat with a black coat.
4) Axolotl.
Other amphibians such as frogs and salamanders are aquatic at birth and then go through a metamorphosis. The axolotls do not, they remain like tadpoles with legs. This species is endemic to the Valley of Mexico and although it has a pokemon in its honor, it is in critical danger of extinction.
To create the water pokemon called "Wooper", the authors were inspired by the axolotl.
5) Colugo.
Also called dermopters, "fur wings", these animals from Southeast Asia are the best gliders in the world, can jump from one tree and reach another that is more than 70 meters away. They are also called "flying lemurs", but they are not primates although they are related.
Colugos provides ecological functions in terms of seed dispersal and as food for predators.
6) Coral.
It is hard as a stone and looks like a plant, but in reality the corals are colonies of thousands of animals that feed on microscopic algae with which they sometimes associate. Each individual is called "Polypus" and some hunt prey with a tiny harpoon called "nematocysts.
There are many types of coral and thanks to them there are reefs like the Great Barrier Reef, which give habitat to many other species and which are in danger of disappearing due to climate change.
The largest coral reef is the Great Barrier Reef, which spans 1,600 miles (2,600 km) off the east coast of Australia. It's so big that you can see it from space!
7) Komodo dragon.
The komodo of Indonesia are the largest lizards in the world, weigh about 70 kilos, measure up to 3 meters. They are still very similar to their ancestors who lived almost 4 million years ago. Although they do not spit fire they have a moderate poison. Its bite gets worse because its saliva is a potent broth for virulent bacteria.
During the past 41 years, they have killed at least four people.
8) Narwhal.
This cetacean, a close relative of the whales, has a kind of spiral horn that can measure up to 2 meters long and weigh 10 kilos. In the medieval era it was possible to trade with this appendix that many believed was a unicorn horn and that it was miraculous, the truth is that this was not a horn but a very long tooth. Sometimes it helps them to fight or to open the ice, but their main function is that of the sensory organ with which they "smell" and perceive the temperature of their environment.
This species is known as the unicorn of the sea...
The adult males reach a length of 4.6 meters and a weight of 1,600 kilos. The females are somewhat smaller: 4.0 meters in length and one ton of weight.
The fang of the Narwhal does not stop growing until the death of the animal and does so in a spiral to the left.
9) Tardigrade.
Also called "water bears", these small animals measure barely half a millimeter. They live in the layer of water that forms on moss or ferns. The surprising thing is that in spite of their size they are very resistan: they can support up to 6000 thousand atmospheres of pressure, 200 degrees Celsius of temperature, much more radiation than the rest of the animals and spend up to 10 years without water.
In 2007 they sent a group of them and exposed them to space: they survived and even continued to reproduce. They are the toughest animals in the world.
They have no circulatory or respiratory system, but excretory, digestive and nervous.
10) Mantis lobster.
This crustacean is not only famous for its colorful colors or because its sense of sight includes 16 types of photoreceptors that allow you to see colors that we can not even imagine (the human being only has 3). It is also recognized because with its powerful pincers it makes an impact as fast as a .22 caliber bullet, with a force, for an instant of up to 153 kilograms. The blow is so strong that it creates a cavitation bubble and generates a shock wave. With a blow like this can break the shell of clams or crabs and even glass without any problem.
Even if the initial blow fails the opponent, the shock wave that occurs can stun and even kill the victim.
11) Portuguese man o' war.
Although it resembles a jellyfish, this animal is in fact a group of animals that, although genetically identical, have different forms and functions. One inflates and becomes pneumatophore, which serves to float driven by the winds. Others specialize in digestion and others in reproduction, others become poisonous tentacles that hang up to 9 meters deep and that with their tiny stingers called nematocysts, paralyze and kill fish (although sometimes clown fish can live among the tentacles for protect yourself from predators).
Apart from some turtles, the only predator of the Portuguese man o' war is the Glaucus Atlanticus.
In humans, this poison has neurotoxic, cytotoxic and cardiotoxic consequences, which produces a very strong and intense pain, even cases of death have been recorded.
12) Glaucus atlanticus.
Also called "blue dragon" this beautiful mollusk is related to slugs and snails and likes to travel floating in tropical seas around the world. The bite of the Portuguese man o' war does not hurt him, and in fact he eats them. The surprising thing is that by devouring them, the nematocysts of the Portuguese man o' war remain in the body, which they use in turn to cause painful bites.
All blue dragons are hermaphrodites, which means they have male and female reproductive organs.
If you have noticed, our world is inhabited by really impressive creatures, although some of them are going extinct and maybe we do not get to know, but we still have to discover many more species, so, what the future holds for us is truly thrilling...
