More peacock talk

They are very tough birds. They keep snakes away. Eat tons of insects. Are very social. During the day the ladies and the children are together, wandering here and there for food and fun. The guys hang out together in another area. Getting into fights sometimes or strutting around with feathers on full display in the spring. A favorite of the guys is looking for their own reflections in a car and then pecking at it. Not all that great for the finish on the car. They can stand there and peck all day unless someone chases them away.

They do really funny things. Like these foot prints all over the driveway. They like to snuggle into a bare spot in the ground. Maybe it's a little cool or maybe the dirt acts like talcum powered. Who knows. But they settle in and their bottom feathers on their undersides get filled with dirt and dust. They walk onto the driveway and sit down. It leaves a big dust spot and when they walk away there is a foot print.

They certainly can fly and when one of them takes off it is spectacular. Like a 747 taking off on a runway. But they don't fly very often, basically just to hop into a tree to take rest for the night. Mostly they just walk around. They can be very very fast on their feet. Even the teeny little chicks that are starting to appear now. They move so fast you can't even see their little feet and legs.

The beauty of the males is hard to look at. The iridescent blue and green. They are just right here with us. Like ducks they have no fear of people.
