Papilio polyxenes

in #photography8 years ago

This morning, I was able to capture shote of the Papilio polyxenes, otherwise known as the Black Swallowtail Butterfly using my Canon 80D camera. This butterfly is a commonly sighted butterfly throughout the United States and is actually the state butterfly for both New Jersey and for Oklahoma.

There are some interesting facts about this butterfly. For one, there are over 550 different varieties of the Swallowtail, but all of them have the two small tails, one on each wing, that is seen in these photos. The Giant Swallowtail is the largest butterfly.

Also an interesting story behind the name, "Papilio polyxenes". These butterflies are named after the Greek mythological character Polyxena. She is the character that betrayed Achilles, letting others know of his one weakness, his heel, thus he was shot with an arrow in his heel and died. While there are multiple stories on how she died, most agree that the common ending for her was dying by Achilles' grave to atone for betraying him.

Like most butterflies, they feed on specific nectars of flowers. Also, their life cycle, from egg to completion of pupal stage lasts from 32 - 57 days. Truly an interesting and beautiful creature.

One love,

Awww beautiful pictures, the story behind its name tho. So much for the death of a betrayal

I completely agree. One of the most interesting backstories that I have ever heard for any creature. There is always history in a name...

Beautiful butterfly.
As of 2005, 552 extant species have been identified in tropical and temperate regions
I always like your photography.

Thank you for the update in information! Many blessings.

butterflies and plants, perfect mutualism symbiosis. thank you for sharing the beauty, warm greetings from the gayo plateau.

Thank you for the kind words and appreciation shown for my work! I greatly appreciate it!

These pictures are exquisite, its been long ive admired nature in this form. It makes me remember my childhood days when all we did was chase butterflies and never catch them
Thanks for sharing these beauties

I used to do the same thing as a child. Since I started taking photographs, I realized that it was definitely the wrong course of action to chase them! Haha. Sitting still and appreciating what is right in front of you allows you to see alot more than chasing wildly at something. Many blessings!

All shots are good but first one is very nice shot!
Take CARE
Have a good day
