Depression: Not just Sadness

NOTE: Please keep in mind that this post is made to inform and try to help people with their situation, do not take this negatively.. The content is purely my opinion -- if ever you have your thoughts, feel free to comment them down.


I am a hundred percent sure that you have heard of "Depression".. What first came into your mind when you read that word? "Death", "Suicide", "Hopelessness" ..almost everything connected to negativity.. or maybe some positive words such as "Heal", "Medicine", "Solution" .. ? It depends on how your mind works -- and if you are trapped in it or actually have an experience with it.

Foremost, what is Depression? I read this article, and I have the urge to share it with you.

As stated in the article, it is also known as Major Depressive Disorder.. Yes - it is considered as a mental illness.. and in fact, it is treatable.. but it is not easy as being healed because of a slight fever, or just covering up a wound with a bandage.. this disorder takes more time to overcome -- it could take months or even years, depending on how long it has existed.

How would you know that you have fallen into depression? Take time to read the article above.. and if the symptoms say a lot, then I suggest that you should move, as soon as possible. But I also recommend that you should not only rely on what you read, if you have that strong feeling about this - then take time to talk to a psychiatrist.

Moving on.. I do not need to include all the information from that link, I would like to share my views about this topic..

So..

As I have observed, most people do not know what Depression truly is -- but as I know, it is more than just temporary sadness. It may be because of piled-up problems that caused the person to be hopeless to solve them one by one..


What can Depression do to a person?


The following are its effects:

  • Usually, a depressed person finds it hard to conquer his or her troubles one by one.. since depression has that talent in bringing someone down..
  • As it does that, it also lowers interest with hobbies and maybe daily activities - if a person loves doing a specific activity, with this case, the depressed might end up forgetting how to actually do it.
  • Depression is in fact, connected to suicide .. The thoughts of suicide attempts and self-harming would be hard to get out of mind.. (DON'T DO IT THOUGH.. PLEASE.)
  • It gives way to distraction -- lose entire focus, and it would be harder to think about anything.. decisions would not be anymore a piece of cake.
  • Not only those, but it is that kind of monster which feeds on a soul -- it drains whole energy.. causing a depressed person to move slower than usual.
  • Long story short -- depression slowly changes your whole life into a darker one to kill you in its hands.


    This is the right time for you to lose focus on what depression does to a person, but it is actually a good thing that you are informed about its effects -- it is better to keep your attention with what should be done to fight depression..

    How to beat Depression?


    The following ways might help to overcome the situation:

  • Be patient enough. It is not at all easy to fight, but taking your time to heal is actually a good start.. knowing that this kind of disorder isn't too temporary.
  • Engage with the positives. The best way to fight depression is to kill it with joy, being positive would help you change your views in life -- possibly making it easier to kick depression out of your life.
  • Distract yourself. Keeping yourself busy and occupied with dozens of activities could help you cope up with it for a while, less thoughts connected to negativity.
  • Try to force, but not too much. It might sound weird, but try to convince yourself to have fun with your hobbies - do your best to keep your interest. But do not force yourself too much to the point that you'll break down.
  • Take time to connect. Feel that you are not alone in this journey, connect with your family and friends and try to open up your problems to them -- it might help. Do not keep everything inside until it all explodes.
  • DO NOT FORGET TO CONNECT WITH GOD. ^_^

    I guess that's most of my thoughts about this illness.

    NOTE: I know that it is not easy to fight depression, I may not be in my place to speak about this..
    but always do your best to live. Remember that you are too precious to give up.

    Always remember that life may be hard, but continue on writing the book of your life -- at times, you might ran out of ink, but it isn't at all too hard to take a rest, and grab a refill..

    In addition - I also find it fascinating how a semicolon ( ; ) is a symbol related to life.

    A long time ago, I found out about this project named "Project Semicolon" ..

    Project Semicolon explains that "A semicolon is used when an author could've chosen to end their sentence, but chose not to. The author is you and the sentence is your life".

    @jeseemei It takes a lot of strength to share a post like this and not many people like to read it. I can relate to it. Getting to a doctor for meds did help.

    Depression physically hurts sometimes.
    The only thing that has worked for me was adjusting my perceptions.
    Pills never worked and actually were counter intuitive most of the time.

    That's true, it's a torture too.. But do not let it put you down!

    I try not to, I'm experienced enough that depression doesn't really get me past apathetic anymore. I dunno i guess in some ways that's actually worse.
