May 21, 2020--Practice Blog in the Time of the virus

Kind of a full day. It began with a breakfast of ham rolls and a run to the grocery story with my wife. She has a very soft voice, so it was hard to understand a lot of what she said with the mask on. I got a little frustrated and apologized profusely afterwards. I then went to the Lutheran church I will be playing at on Sunday to practice. It is a nice Dobson remake from 1984 with horizontal trumpets 16', 8', and 4'. I'm a bit of a coward though and won't be using them. Partially, because they are at face level.

I then went across town to teach a lesson after picking up a burger for lunch. My student showed up right on time and we had a nice hour and a half long lesson. Came home and practiced piano until my wife finished up her work and we went for a walk through the neighborhood. Dinner was pork chops, potatoes, and English peas. Going to watch Death in Paradise before bed.

On the organ, I figured out registration for my pieces for Sunday: Prelude Alain's Variations sur un theme Clement Janequin, Tim Knight's Plaint from Organ pieces set two, and In Dir ist Freude by J.S. Bach (BWV 615). I also worked on BWV 631, the opening two Kyries from Couperin's Mass of the Convent (second is recorded above), Tim Knight's Scherzo for Flutes, and Kauffmann's Ein Feste Berg Chorale Prelude.

On the piano, I was pleasantly surprised to find that two of Mendelssohn's Songs without Words which I have been working on are 95% memorized. Likewise, a Chopin Mazurka (Op. 7 No. 1) is memorized at a 75% speed. Tried to work on a third Song without words (Tarantella) for memory, and the first page is pretty much there.
