The Capital: VIENTIANE, Laos
I don’t have a phone. I only have this first generation iPad Pro from 2015. It doesn’t matter if you have a cheap phone or camera as long as you get as close as you can, stay steady, and make sure the sun is to your back.
I first came here in 2001. Some things have changed a lot, while others are the same. I remember seeing left over US Army trucks and young guys still wearing 1980s style leather jackets. When I asked an old man where the ATM was, he had never heard of one before. When I explained to him that it was a machine where you push buttons and money comes out, he asked if he could join me to look for it.
I had downloaded the new Terminator from the Pirate Bay, but it was a cam version so I thought I’d delete it and watch it here. Unfortunately for me I was a day early and broke, so I guess I’ll have to wait again. Except for Star Wars, I never go to the movies. I think this may be worth watching, but I don’t want to read any reviews and ruin it.
I didn’t get to see Terminator, but I had a great cheap meal at this food court.
Kmart here has nothing to do with Kmart in America. The K is for Korea. If you’re Korean or like Korean food, then you’ll know this chain.
When I first saw this ugly building back in 2001, it was so dusty because of all the dirt roads.
At least they are honest about it.
The ceiling is kinda cool. I had to lay on the ground to get this shot. An old Chinese guy saw me laying on the ground taking this picture, so he did the same right next to me. The locals had a good laugh at us.
Speaking of China, here is a weird elephant statue made from china.
I would love to ask Graham Hancock if he sees the similarities this had with ancient Egyptian art.
I couldn’t help but think how much solar energy is being wasted on this roof and how perfect this shot would be for my Solar for Siam NGO idea. Using Elon Musk’s new solar roof would also mean not seeing the ugly power lines that ruined this shot.

I was in Vientiane about a year ago and found the pace of life there to be very appealing. It also wasn't nearly as populated as I expected a capitol city to be. When i was talking to some people that live there (and they were from all over the world) they were explaining about how easy it is to work there (from a getting permission to do so by the government sort of way) and this was in stark contrast to how I feel about Thailand, for sure.
I remember that when i looked online for the "Top Attractions" of the city, there weren't many options, because apparently there isn't much to do there. I am find with that.
This was originally a very negative post, because honestly it was a negative experience. 12 hour bus ride of death, dealing with rude Thai immigration officers, the super hot day, rude tuk-tuk drivers, 20 km walk, then another 12 hour Baton death march ride back home, but I cut it out.
It is super easy to find a job there though. If you speak Thai it’s even easier.
The bus driver must have been on meth. I remember all of us bouncing half way to the ceiling several times. Ok he hates his life, his job, cares less if a bunch of poor people and some white guy die, but he should’ve cared about the monk. He was really nice too.
If you ever come to Laos, never ever use one of these crappy van buses, unless you enjoy pain and almost dying every corner.
I'd like to think that all of those buses are in my rear view mirror for now. I can't remember the last time i had a good experience on one of them. Even the VIP options are using the adjective in a very exaggerated sense.
